Is this enough? Having a panic about DC's gifts...

I used to buy a LOT but have over the past few years realised that much of it was crap...cheap filler gifts just so there'd be a big pile. I grew up quite poor though I had a lovely childhood...we never had many toys....certainly nothing unless it was Christmas or Birthday.

So when I had my DC I always overcompensated. I'm learning that this isn't a good idea but I still struggle with the urge to buy a load of shit to fill out the piles.

DDs are 12 and 8....DD aged 12 has a phone, headphones, two quite expensive tops that she wanted, a craft kit, drawing book and pens also coloured pencils, two sets of makeup, two sets of bath type stuff, a canvass for her room....DD aged 8 has a Journey Doll, a large boxed set of clothes for it, a chair set for it and a "pet dog" for it....she also has a small dolls house, a BopIt, a big bead set, drawing book, pens and pencils and one of those FurReal dragons and Jenga.

It's about ten gifts each but I'm worried that DD aged 12's pile will look much smaller because her things cost more but aren't physically large.

Your 12yr old will be looking at her presents, not comparing pile size.

You said it yourself - cheap filler gifts for the sake of it are pointless.

They've both got loads and I'm sure will love their presents

Sounds absolutely great and I'm sure dd1 will understand about the expense v size thing.

Have a lovely Christmas

They sound brilliant gifts, lucky girls, they'll be thrilled to bits Xmas Smile

Thanks...I hope 12 is old enough to know that things like phones and designer clothes are smaller but cost more! She doesn't play with anything these days....though she will craft...I think if I carefully arrange the piles, it should be ok.

What do you mean by "enough"?

Enough for what?

MrsHathaway · 15/12/2016 00:27

It's not about the piles. Or rather, it shouldn't be, at their respective ages. Certainly the 12yo is more likely to care about the £££ value than the size.

It sounds like you've chosen just what they'd like. Well done!

Now don't twitch.

I always breathe a sigh of relief once I get the spend total for each DC the same. In fact it puts me off buying anything else I see.

Needfinsnow · 15/12/2016 00:39

I've got 13 from Father Christmas and 10 from me, spent about £600. I'm a single mum and work my arse off with no help. She has her 3 presents (and more) she asked Father Christmas for, as well as things I know she will love.

for comparative purposes, Ds has two boxes to open from dp and i, one being his computer tower and the other his monitor. he knows he wont get anything else from us and all his other computer bits are from aunts and uncles. it's enough because it's EXACTLY what he wants and he knows it's expensive and we've saved hard for it for him .

it's enough, i'm sure your DD knows that phones and things like that are more expensive so she will get a smaller pile. don't worry and enjoy your day with your girls Xmas Smile
