My Secret Santa recipient could not have looked more pissed off at her present today

I thought it was quite nice - some Occitane hand cream. I don't know her very well but she's always highly groomed, dresses well, seems very pleasant - I thought hand cream would be safe. She has no way of knowing it was me, at least. But seriously - a room of 30+ people opening their gifts, everyone going "Yay! Thanks, Secret Santa!" and generally being cheery, and she just sat and stared at the hand cream like it was a glittery turd or something. I feel bad about it. Anyone else got their Secret Santa present so drastically wrong?

I've got mine tomorrow. Am slightly nervous...

I always buy books now, seems safest bet

sandragreen · 14/12/2016 20:39

Tell yourself she would have had the same face if you had gifted her a Faberge Egg. Some people are just ungrateful.

I would have been very pleased with it.

chipsandgin · 14/12/2016 20:40

I once got some (very expensive) stick on nipple tassels in a work secret santa (which will be massively outing if anyone reading this knows me as it became legendary). Awkward. Then found out it was my boss who'd got me to pick for. Ew.

Handcream sounds lovely. Miserable cow!

Buddahbelly · 14/12/2016 20:40

Oh god, SS should be banned! Last year I got the office letch as my SS, Had no idea what to get him and browsing a book shop 1 day I saw 1 that would be perfect so went in and got it.

Imagine my horror when all the gifts where handed out and id forgot about the supervisor with the same name as my SS being handed the gift I'd bought - A book of erotic images in dot to dot. (so basically it was a dot to dot porno book). Perfect for the office letch, not so perfect for my supervisor who went bright red and left the room asap - minus the book. Blush

"Mr Dick" - that must have been excruciating Shock.

IT sounds like a lovely gift. She sounds hard to please.

As lovely as it was, maybe she didn't realise how much such naice hand cream would cost and knowing the secret Santa budget felt a bit done over. That's not your fault- you know what you spent and what a nice choice it was.

I'd have been chuffed!

Mummamayhem · 14/12/2016 20:41

I'd have loved that! Once I was given a ceramic money box in the shape of a giant football with 4 teeny tiny footballers feet...I actually thought I was going to cry!

chipsandpeas · 14/12/2016 20:42

this is why we do a would like and dont want list then you cant really go wrong

dingdongthewitchishere · 14/12/2016 20:42

Did you have a limit for your presents? Maybe she saw hers and realised she just gave tat worth pennies for someone else.

Nothing wrong with hand cream at all, why would that make anyone feel old. You did well OP, it's very hard to find a small gift for someone you don't know!

KingJoffreysRestingCuntface · 14/12/2016 20:43

I haven't received mine yet.

But it'll either be some nice tea or a mug with cats on.

I keep myself to myself and no one knows me that well.

Lookinatu · 14/12/2016 20:43

OK am worried I have got a friend a gift set of hand cream for Christmas as a token present off ds. Should I change it? I am worried now.

queenc81 · 14/12/2016 20:43

Hassled. Worst day of my working career! I was referred to as Mrs dick for months, hugely outing Blush

Chelsea26 · 14/12/2016 20:44

I've got one of these for my secret santa - I was pleased with it but now I'm doubting myself

VoodooPeople · 14/12/2016 20:44

L'occitane is far from cheap and smells lovely. She sounds like an ungrateful cow.

I've never had a Secret Santa 'fail' but mainly because I used to be in charge of it so ensured I got someone who liked rude/jokey presents. Now I know it's supposed to be names out of a hat but it was the only perk of organising it Grin I did also let people pick again if they got someone they really hated!

I've seen lots of drama caused by Secret Santa (one woman actually cried) so I stopped taking part years ago.

Laska5772 · 14/12/2016 20:45

I feel better now I know its not just me ... .Sounds like office SS should deninately be boycotted!!

Bogeyface · 14/12/2016 20:45

She is probably one of those people who has very precise expectations of gifts, has an Amazon wish list set up for every gift giving occasion and you go "off list" at your peril......

Bet her in laws hate her :o

TheWayYouLookTonight · 14/12/2016 20:47

Maybe she has eczema/dermatitis or something that means she can't use nice toiletries? My DP has eczema which means he can only use very bland unscented stuff. He manages the condition well so you wouldn't be able to see it by looking at him.

Onenerfwarfrombreakdown · 14/12/2016 20:47

Just had to say Laska that bag is truly hideous Grin not surprised it went to the Chazza shop!

Fiderer · 14/12/2016 20:47

Send it hither, you slacker.

(and TWW - is it the only way to avoid All That Is Grim?)

sandragreen · 14/12/2016 20:48

Chelsea I wouldn't be thrilled with that I must admit Xmas Grin

Girlwhowearsglasses · 14/12/2016 20:48

L'Occitane hand cream is very nice indeed

Kione · 14/12/2016 20:50

I received L'Occitane handcream once! I hardly ever use hand cream but I left it in my desk drawer and made sure I used it! Two years and still going tho...
But the person I bought for, nail polish and lipstick fir someone that uses both was rude and pulled a face to the person next to her.
The last time I took part I went into big effort to get something lovely and I got given vouchers for M&S. Sod that never took part again.
But I've had some awful stuff over the years including a very strange handbag from a second hand shop (or bottom of an ancient cupboard), no labels and smelled so old. Its difficult to pretend at that one...

MadameCholetsDirtySecret · 14/12/2016 20:50

Hand cream isn't for old ladies any more than any moisturiser is. What a ridiculous suggestion. She sounds a nightmare OP.

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 14/12/2016 20:51

I've had to feign joy at a lot of secret Santa presents in my time, a few of them being handcream which is not really my thing. However it's just the polite and kind thing to do to pretend you like whatever it is even if you don't.

Years of crap secret Santa means that in my current workplace along with your name you put 3 types of things you'd love and anything that's a big no no. Everyone's happy. Im incredibly easy to buy for, fruity smelling bath stuff and chocolate.

PollytheDolly · 14/12/2016 20:52

Maybe she's just a miserable bitch?
