Fun ways to reveal a not-yet-purchased present to the dc?

Hi everyone,

We have decided to get dd1(6yo) and dd2(4yo) a kindle fire for kids each for Christmas but are hoping to get a deal on Boxing Day so we don't have to fork out full price. They have got other smaller presents to open on Christmas day but we are hoping to reveal their main present to them on boxing day when PIL are here as they are going halves with us on the cost.

So how would you do it?

At the moment we are thinking of wrapping up a set of headphones each and then explaining what they are for...any better ideas?

Don't say anything úntil you have them ready to give...
They 6 and 4 not 14 and 16 ....
At 6 ad 4 they will be happy with whatever they get now. Don't try and focus on non existent presents.

The kindle fire 7 inch has dropped in price today on Amazon , Black is £34.99.

AndNowItsSeven · 14/12/2016 12:52

Sorry all colours.

stripeknee · 14/12/2016 12:56

i dont know which kindle you intend on getting but the kindle tablet is on offer at amazon and currys today 34.99

talksensetome · 14/12/2016 13:08

I would just buy it now tbh, even if it is reduced on boxing day you still have to order it and wait for it to be delivered.

It is an excellent gift for that age group. I got one for DS last year when he was 3 and he loves it and can navigate it himself. When the screen smashed they sent a replacement for free no questions asked.

CoshPunt · 14/12/2016 13:44

It's also pricematched at John Lewis today too. Seems silly not to give them it over the sake of £5 (was 29.99 on Black Friday). I doubt Amazon will reduce it to that price again until Prime Day next year anyway.

Good luck OP whatever you decide. I think I'd save it as a totally amazing surprise as they are still very young and a lot of children find delayed gratification a very difficult thing to cope with.

Joy through the anticipation is something that comes with age.

I've not read everyone's replies but if no one has suggested it yet, check camel camel camel for detailed price checking so you will know whether to bother waiting or not. If you decide to it give it after Christmas, you could always make it part of the Christmas tradition for the children - give it to them on the epiphany on 6 January when the wise men visited Jesus? It actually makes more sense than the 25th... my DDs are a similar age and would love it if a present like that was kept back till later as it stretches the excitement, but better not to tell them till you actually have it, and that would also mean they would appreciate anything else you got them on Christmas and would stop them just zoning out with a tablet for the whole of Christmas Day.

throwingpebbles · 14/12/2016 22:53

I think that's part of my opposition to a tablet for Xmas....surely Christmas Day is the last day anyone wants their kids to be screen zombies.

Kindle Fire 8GB is currently £35 on Amazon (Prime). I got an email about it yesterday. Is it going to get cheaper than that?

caperboo · 15/12/2016 07:16

Pretty much all of their friends have had tablets since they were 3 or 4yo...

If it's any consolation I think tablets for kids are fine we just bought our daughter the kindle fire for kids she's 3 , she's already an expert on the pad , we limit her usage time to 30 mins in morning at weekends and 30 evening times during the week she gets it just evenings .

caperboo · 15/12/2016 07:19

The Kindle for Kids wasn't massively reduced in the Black Friday sales. It had about £5 off.

I paid £65 for our one kindle fire for kids but it wasn't a Black Friday deal must of been about end of oct / beginning Nov

SnorkelParka · 15/12/2016 08:14

Fwiw I was massively judgey when my dnephew had an ipod touch age 6...but then we got them too and have not looked back. They could listen to music, audiobooks (great for long car journeys), play silly games, facetime or imessage their cousins. And they did lots of other interesting things too. I do know some kids who struggle to regulate their use of tablets, so definitely have a plan in place. I agree with getting the normal kindle fire, not kids, restrictions are easy to manage and at this age you can have full oversight of it anyway. It's well worth it for the price. I hope they enjoy it, whether you get it before or after christmas.

I think the 'look what santa left under the sofa' method on a day after Christmas is the only way to do this. Or get PILs to bring the kindles around wrapped and say that they were left at their house for your children. Kids love presents so they won't be any less special a few days afterwards. Or start a family tradition of saving one present for New Year's Day?

BertieBeats · 15/12/2016 09:01

We managed to get 2 kids kindles for a very good price. We were going to give them to our 2 (3 and 6) for Christmas but tbh I ended up giving them to the kids early as they don't really see it as a gift. Would've been unfair to palm them off as a Christmas present when really they're more a gift to us ,the parents ,as it gives us 5 minutes of peace every now and again Grin I would probably forget about the kindles and buy them later on in the year and just get toys (they'll appreciate that more).

2014newme · 15/12/2016 09:06

We told our kids one Xmas that we were going to Disneyland. They thought we were going that day #epicfail they were disappointed we weren't
Give them the present on boxing day but don't tell them on Xmas day

caperboo · 15/12/2016 09:11

I think the only difference between fire and kids fire is the case and the if they break we replace it policy ,

llangennith · 15/12/2016 09:33

Don't mention the Kindle Fire present to your DC at all. Then when you do buy one each for them it'll be a bonus surprise present.
At their young age they'll be delighted with whatever presents they get from Santa.
They are much too young for you to reveal a not yet purchased present. Bizarre idea!
