Do you tip your postman?

We've had the same postman for years, i always put some money in a Christmas card for him.

I think if everyone in our area did the same he'd have a decent, well deserved, Christmas bonus.

However, I don't think people really do this anymore, does this make my gift look silly and out of place (insulting even?)

Yes. My tip this year is please close the front gate when you leave.

VixenLupin · 12/12/2016 13:12

No, because every time I see the postman it's a different person. I can't afford that many tips!

happystory · 12/12/2016 13:22

We used to, when we had the same regular postman. He was very helpful and sensible with leaving stuff if we were out. But he retired and I wouldn't know who our postman/woman is now.

chanie44 · 12/12/2016 16:49

I'm rarely home when the post arrives and I wouldn't know the postman (or woman if I saw them). Besides, most of my mail is electronic anyway.

Crumbs1 · 12/12/2016 16:55

Yes we do - £25 - but then we live in tiny village and we all know our postman who does all sorts of extras. I think he does get a reasonable sum altogether.

MelchettsTinslyMoustache · 12/12/2016 16:59

Never have before but we do have the same postman and he's a treasure for squirrelling my parcels away while I'm asleep (night worker) so as not to disturb me.
For this alone I feel the man deserves at least a peerage so will likely tip him this year (as a peerage is not within my area of competence) Xmas Grin

FadedRed · 12/12/2016 17:42

I do the same. I don't care if no one else does it. It's enough for a couple of beers or a decent bottle of wine. I also give the window cleaner and binmen a tip, also used to give the milkman one when we had one.
If they feel insulted they can always leave it! Xmas Grin

pinksummer · 12/12/2016 17:44

I do. He's always nice and chatty and leaves things in a sensible place.

thewookieswife · 12/12/2016 17:46

Yes he's an absolute gem !!

WipsGlitter · 12/12/2016 18:03

No. Never see them!

PodgeBod · 12/12/2016 22:15

I will this year, the postie is really lovely so I'll pop her a bit in a card.
My Dad is a postman- he certainly isn't insulted by a tip. He's always chuffed if somebody thinks of him.

attheendoftheday · 13/12/2016 00:18

I do. But our postie goes above and beyond - we have a deal where he fakes my signature on deliveries and leaves them in the coal bunker so I don't have to make the 45 min in each direction trip to collect it.

mammmamia · 13/12/2016 00:38

I'm pretty sure your postie could get fired for doing that!

cheeseandcrackers · 13/12/2016 00:53

Gifts worth over £25 should not be accepted as they break Royal Mail bribery rules - just a warning in case anyone was thinking this.
Too many different postmen here to tip, and even more at Christmas.

Trumpton · 13/12/2016 01:02

Yes I tip our postie. He is an absolute star . During the big snow ( it's known as that as it very rarely snows here ) he was unable to get his van to a neighbour who lived down a long lane and had recently been widowed so he parked up and walked to her to check she was happy and had her mail.

He also picked me up when he found me with a broken arm and stayed until help arrived.
He leaves my parcels in a safe place each time and is unfailing cheerful and he has a lovely pair of legs ! Must be all that walking !

73kittycat73 · 13/12/2016 02:08

We don't usually have the same post person so no, we don't tip them. We will be tipping the bin men though, they are very good and take extra bags (That won't fit in the wheelie bin.) if we have any.

INeedNewShoes · 13/12/2016 02:21

Is £5 enough to tip my postman?

I'd like to give him a tip for Christmas as he is so helpful but I can't afford any more than £5. Will that amount seem mean?

Trumpton · 13/12/2016 06:56

£5 is fine ,you could just say " Have a drink on us ,Happy Christmas "

I only started tipping ours after the two events above .

heron98 · 13/12/2016 09:33

I have absolutely no idea who my postman is. I am amazed anyone does. Are you all in all the time?
