DH has just bought our youngest a ridiculously expensive present, how do I even this out?!

DS7 wanted a really expensive present. Me and DH had a chat and agreed we would not get him it because of how much it cost but said we would look at it again next year/for his birthday (depending on what money he got for Christmas) and go from there.

I have bought all presents and spent roughly the same on my youngest 3. DH turned up today and gleefully announced he has bought it and won't DS be so happy. He will be but seriously!! I don't know what to do to even it out! It doesn't have to be exactly even, but it just seems really unfair right now. DHs argument is that we were going to get it for him next year, but the intention was he put a significant proportion towards it.

I can't really match it with gifts for the other 2 as would not know what to buy and we have a rule of no cash at Christmas.

Aghhh. Do I try and take it back or just explain to DS5 and DS6 what is happening and hope they are okay with it?

Just because he has bought it you don't have to give it to him now - it can still wait until the birthday?

Nearlyadoctor · 11/12/2016 18:55

I'm confused too....

MTWTFSS · 11/12/2016 18:55

I'm confused how many children you have and their ages

whyohwhy000 · 11/12/2016 18:56

Is the child who got the really expensive present 7 years old or your seventh child?

RJnomore1 · 11/12/2016 18:56

I think OP has four adult sons, then three still at home aged 15, 17, 19, and the laptop is for the youngest.

I like the idea of the card about the car and holidays.

AndNowItsSeven · 11/12/2016 18:58

If you have four sons how is this ds7?

AndNowItsSeven · 11/12/2016 18:59

Are you counting backwards op?

RebelandaStunner · 11/12/2016 18:59

They are getting car and holiday, he is getting a bigger present at Christmas. Don't see an issue as they are all old enough to understand.

AndNowItsSeven · 11/12/2016 18:59

Ds7 means your 7th son do you really mean ds3?

If you have four sons how is this ds7?

4 boys + 3 girls?

MycatsaPirate · 11/12/2016 19:00

How about getting all 7 sons a bride each?

whyohwhy000 · 11/12/2016 19:02

Simpler idea: just return the laptop!

GraceGrape · 11/12/2016 19:03

It reads to me that there are 7 sons. DS5, DS6 and DS7 are all living at home. They are 15, 17 and 19 and get presents of equal value. The older boys are grown up and get smaller gifts.

blueskyinmarch · 11/12/2016 19:03

Is this a gift for he 19yo? Something that will really help him at uni? If so I would tell the other teens that when they need a similar item they will get it. The younger ones won't even notice.

Or you could keep it for his birthday if it isn't too far away? Or give it to hom after Christmas as a necessary uni item?

GraceGrape · 11/12/2016 19:04

And I would keep the laptop until his birthday if it's earlyish in the year.

AndNowItsSeven · 11/12/2016 19:07

Night I have 7dc , 5 girls so dd1 to dd5 and two sons ds1 and ds2 , I don't have a ds7.

Hulababy · 11/12/2016 19:07

OP has 7 sons.
DS1, DS2, DS3, DS4 are all adults who no longer live at home.
DS5 is 18y and at university.
DS6 is 17y and at school, living at home.
DS7 is 15y and at school, living at home.

The gift of an expensive laptop is for DS7, the 15 year old.

However, DS5 is being given money for a holiday later this year and DS6 is being given a car also later this year. However they are not yet aware of this.

DollyPlastic · 11/12/2016 19:07

Who is who?

AndNowItsSeven · 11/12/2016 19:08

Ahh thanks Grace I am not with it tonight.

That's how I read it too. The laptop is for the 15 year old.

I don't think it's a big deal OP. If the others are mad, point out they will get stuff next year. It's a bit bonkers to keep a computer in a cupboard for 6 months just to keep things even. It's not like they all still believe in Santa (I hope).

Empress13 · 11/12/2016 19:08

FGS explain the ages correctly ! Normally in text spk DS7 means son is 7 years old

TheWeeBabySeamus1 · 11/12/2016 19:08

I'm assuming the OP has 7 sons, the youngest 3 being 15, 17 & 19 and the others are adults? Is that right?

I'd give it to DS before Christmas so the others know that as they're getting the car/holiday so this is in lieu of that rather than an extra Christmas present.

Hulababy · 11/12/2016 19:08

I would now give DS7 his laptop.

I would also then wrap an envelope each for DS 5 and DS6 containing a 'gift card' for their car and holiday, to be 'cashed in' at the right time later in the year.

AndNowItsSeven · 11/12/2016 19:09

Anyway in answer to your question I think you should keep the laptop, he will need it for school anyway.
