Would you trust your turkey to supermarket delivery or is it just a bit of a risk?

I've got a Waitrose slot booked. I've not hosted Xmas for a couple of years but last time I did, there were a couple of things that were out of stock - nothing major and I was able to pick them up the next day (always get the delivery on 23rd in case of disaster).

Normally, I get a turkey from our butcher but this year, there's not many of us and my mum is set on a Waitrose turkey crown but I'm worried that it might be out of stock on the day because they basically grab your order off the shelves don't they? I spoke to an assistant today and she reckons as long as you can put it in your basket and pay for it, then it will be delivered. But that hasn't always been my experience (as with any supermarket - I don't think Waitrose are any worse). For some reason, my mum is convinced that this general rule won't apply to the Xmas turkey Confused

What does MN collective wisdom reckon? I can order a turkey crown from the butcher as well incidentally

And yes I know this is beyond trivial

Nope I wouldn't, especially if I was having people over.

I've already bought mine [not even a stealth boast]. Stuck it in the freezer.

However, have you considered Ocado? I believe their stock system is designed to prevent shortfalls, and you can order most Waitrose branded goods through them.

A few years ago, a mate of mine ordered her big Christmas shop from Asda. It was to be delivered on Christmas Eve. On the 23rd, there was a massive dollop of snow in our area and Asda cancelled all deliveries. She ended up without turkey, wine, pigs in blankets etc. So I'm reluctant to order anything vital online.

I've just emailed Morrisons with the same query :) last year they didn't send me sprouts, carrots and something else essential. This year I'm hoping that if it's checked out early enough it will be on their stock system so guaranteed delivery..... (they use the ocado warehouse so same system a pp mentioned)

I think the turkey ordering thing just borders on madness these days.

For the last few years, I've popped in to M & S or Waitrose early doors on 22nd and [gasp] BOUGHT ONE OFF THE SHELF. And whizzed through checkout and found myself in a nice coffee shop by 8.30am, relaxing. Whilst the people that preordered either went in at 5am or in a stupidly long preorder queue or are ranting because it's the wrong one etc.

It's a fucking turkey - the shelves are full of them.

I have always ordered turkey online for the 23rd and on the one occasion it was subbed, it was absolutely zero problem to get another from the shops. They were full of them and we only nipped in and out, so didn't get caught up in all the madness.

Do you have your delivery slot booked already? If so, get the turkey crown in your basket now. I use Tesco, and am the same, delivery booked for 23rd to allow for weird substitutions. Two years ago we had dc3 end of October, and wanted it all to be simple, and so ordered it all online with Tesco, including the turkey. (Admittedly I did go for their finest bronze turkey crown, to allow for the fact someone else might not be as picky as me when choosing Xmas Grin )

With Tesco, there's a message on certain items for Christmas that when you put them into your basket it says after a certain date this amount cannot now be changed. So I think they account for it in their ordering and 'book' one in for you that possibly doesn't get out in the fridges. You could always ring customer services to check if this is the case?

daisydalrymple · 08/12/2016 20:50

oh watto the same thing happened to us that year with Tesco! Luckily our slot was the 23rd so it wasn't too much bother to print our order and go out with it later on. I did feel sorry for the customer service team ringing round though, the lady who spoke to me had obviously had a lot of stressful calls!

White Christmas predicted in some areas already....

PickleSarnie · 08/12/2016 20:52

I ordered a crown from ocado one year. They ran out so subbed it with a bigger and better one for the same cost.

Ladydepp · 08/12/2016 20:57

I have ordered a turkey online (Ocado) for several years and never had a problem.

Perhaps this will be the year...we can order a curry Grin

JigglyTuff · 08/12/2016 20:59

I have got my delivery slot already booked, yes. But some of your stories aren't giving me that much hope. I am seriously thinking of going to the butcher when I know it will actually be there - the idea of my mum's STRESS if the crown is substituted for enormo-bird is just not worth it :o
