Would a Christmas card from an unknown neighbour be odd?!

I'd like to send Christmas cards to our neighbours, as an introduction.

We're new to the street and have only met a few, even then some of their names are a bit hazy. I'm hoping this would get us reciprocal cards so we can learn people's names.

Question is, how many? The street probably has 100 houses. Do I just do immediate houses on our terrace and the one facing?

And can I post them or do you think it needs to be face to face? I considered adding my phone number, as a kind of "here if you need us" sentiment. (And also in case there are issues with the house).

Too weird? Should I wait till we bump into people? Xmas Confused

No not wierd at all. Great idea. Go for it .

I'm not sure about your phone number, but definitely send the cards. Lovely idea 😊 I would do immediate houses and opposite, as well as anyone else you have met.

No phone number, but card is a lovely idea. Maybe put names with your house number in brackets?

A friend of mine did this when she moved into her house about 10 yrs ago, she knows loads of people in her street now.

JigglyTuff · 06/12/2016 08:04

That's what I did when I moved in. I did the 5 or 6 houses either side of us at first and then added the odd one or two further up and down the street as we made friends.

I wrote our names and then (from number 15) at the bottom

FortyFacedFuckers · 06/12/2016 08:06

Yes my neighbours sent cards on our first Christmas here from FortyFacedFuckers & family (no 3) it was a great way of learning who everyone were.

Lovely idea Xmas Smile

I moved to this house just before last Christmas neighbours all sent cards I thought it was lovely do it

NickyEds · 06/12/2016 08:09

We did this last year as it was our first Christmas at this house. I just wrote " Merry Christmas and a Happy New year" (as I didn't know most of the names) followed by our names and house number. I wouldn't put a phone number though- I think that might be a bit odd.

We are moving next week and I plan to do cards for the 6 or so neighbouring houses. Go for it

MrsJayy · 06/12/2016 08:11

Don't send 100 cards blimey we did about 8/9 so my side of the street

TheMortificadosDragon · 06/12/2016 08:19

Definitely a good idea, but no phone number - they're still strangers at this point. Don't leave it till the last minute, to give friendly new neighbours time to reciprocate and then keep those cards for future reference.

29redshoes · 06/12/2016 08:34

Yes definitely. We did this and it worked well. Not sure how many I'd do in your situation though (but not 100!) Either side and facing plus anyone else you've met seems a good compromise?

Floggingmolly · 06/12/2016 08:55

Not at all. It's a lovely thing to do Smile

fledglingFTB · 06/12/2016 09:59

Ooh good, I'll definitely do this.

Is it rude to drop a card through the door when there are lights on? I don't get home I'll after 7 most nights and I know a lot have young children. Or would you knock and hand it over?

OP posts:
MrsJayy · 06/12/2016 10:01

Just shove it through the letter box there is no need to knock

Ceaser1981 · 06/12/2016 20:03

I send cards to my immediate neighbours and the 3 houses opposite. I probably wouldnt add my number though, incase you get dodgy calls from teenagers that may live there lol (or the adults)! Id put the house number under your name.
