Trains, Brio, god who knows

Any recommendations for a train set for a 3yo that will grow with him? Is it just Brio, or can I get him one with a train that actually goes? Any suggestions gratefully received.

Oh wait Brio does have trains that go. Sorted. (Sorry).

Brio track is the way to go. All the Thomas trains fit on the track too! You can mix and match. We got the big Brio table too and DC got years of play out of that. This was a few years ago now, but lots of Thomas trains had batteries and moved along the track quite happily on their own. They probably do even more exciting things now!

I would highly recommend the Brio set. I ended up buying quite a few battery powered engines for it so you get the best of both worlds.

Bigjigs - on Amazon- is interchangeable with all wooden train sets including brio and is much cheaper and just as nice!

We have a mix of brio, bigjigs, John Lewis, IKEA & Tesco and it is all interchangeable. My favourite brand is bigjigs as there is so much choice & it is cheaper than brio.
Not all of the Thomas trains are compatibly with brio as some of them are the wrong gauge; some certainly are though.

Tkmaxx always has brio at this time of year.

Lidl if you're on a budget (they have some in store at the moment I think)

big jigs stuff is great, would recommend the bendy track for those annoying times hwere it just wont link up, as well as double ended pieces, ie both ends with bumps or sockets, much more satisfying to complete the circuit but boring as a present i guess!

Brio lasts ages. My children used it, then my childminded children played with it ( about 10) and I have it boxed and in the loft in case I have grandchildren. Only about two pieces broken in all the time. I gave it a wipe over withe detail every now and then. So many variations of track and add a few bridges. Have fun!

My kids loved brio too. The Thomas take and play sets are nice too
