And if so...what do you give them?

No

And no one tips me either, public sector worker!

spacefrog35 · 05/12/2016 07:39

Yes. Milkman & posties get biscuits. The binmen get 12 cans of whatever lager is on offer in the supermarket.

majormoo · 05/12/2016 07:40

We give a fiver to postman/bin men. Will gets chocs from pound shop for lolly pop man and my bus driver

Lilaclily · 05/12/2016 07:42

Really?

Eyes opened !

Our postman's isn't always the same one plus we get amazon, yodel, tesco delivering too, couldn't afford everyone

No milkman or window cleaner and there's about 5 bin men who came round in the big lorry

Carneddai · 05/12/2016 07:45

We have the same postie and binmen. So will give them some homemade foody stuff

UptheAnty · 05/12/2016 07:47

Where I grew up we always gave the bin man a bottle of spirits. They got from so many people that they decided between them at the end of the shift who took what and everyone was happy.

But now I don't think anyone does this so one bottle couldn't be shared.
I did suggest a crate of beer but dh was sceptical and suggested I ask you lot what the procedure is now.
We've been outside the U.K. For a few years now and not sure of the etiquette

Always the binmen, a fiver for each member of the crew. When I did my back in they were incredibly helpful even though I hadn't booked assistance. Lovely smiley blokes.

WiltingTulip · 05/12/2016 07:51

I leave a six pack of beer on the bin lid and on the letter box for the last pick up prior to Xmas. My parents did the same growing up. I think it's nice.

7SunshineSeven7 · 05/12/2016 07:51

We used to when we had one postman and give him a tenner in a Christmas card (we knew his name) - now there are so many different ones we don't. Kind of miss it :(

WiltingTulip · 05/12/2016 07:51

(Oh there's only one bin man for us - not a team)

80sMum · 05/12/2016 07:52

When I was growing up, in the 1960s, my parents always used to give what they called a "Christmas Box" to the bin men, the baker, the butcher (bread and meat were delivered in those days, just like milk was), the paper boy and the postman.

I didn't know any different, so continued the tradition when I was first married, for about 10 years. I stopped when I realised that none of my neighbours were doing it and I started thinking for myself and questioned why I was. I haven't done it for over 25 years now.

SVJAA · 05/12/2016 07:52

We give the bin men and the window cleaner a crate of lager, not the postie because he's awful all year round.

VivienneWestwoodsKnickers · 05/12/2016 07:53

No. No one is the same from week to week - why should the guys rostered on the week before Christmas suddenly get a gift even though we've never seen them before?

And the recycling team break glass all over the street without clearing it up, so they can go to hell (you can hear them dropping it at 6am Hmm).

VivienneWestwoodsKnickers · 05/12/2016 07:54

WiltingTulip does the postman then have to carry that on his round for the rest of the day?

expatinscotland · 05/12/2016 07:56

No. Can barely afford gifts for the kids and you're supposed to be handing out gifts to the whole world?

AllPartOfThePlan · 05/12/2016 07:57

Postman gets something, maybe a bottle or some shortbread or something. Bin men I usually leave out some beers or wine or chocolate to share. That's all.

WiltingTulip · 05/12/2016 08:02

Yep. hmmm. Never thought that through though! 😳 Might just put one fancy beer out this year and a six pack for my lovely guy who delivers packages and drives a van! Thanks for pointing out the obvious.

MelchettsTinslyMoustache · 05/12/2016 08:14

I have far too many bin men, one team for food waste, one for recycling, one for rubbish, one for garden waste etc.
I do however now have a milkman who delivers obscenely expensive milk in lovely glass bottles and a wonderful though permanently dour postman who I should probably thank. My postman even puts parcels in my car if I'm out and the porch door is locked.
I'm thinking perhaps a fiver in a card?

GrumpyDullard · 05/12/2016 08:22

My DP is a postie and, even though he doesn't always do the same round every day, he gets Christmas tips. Usually at least a fiver, although most people don't give anything. Never heard of him being given beer, although I'm sure he wouldn't mind: he'd definitely prefer one bottle of a decent craft ale than a six pack of lager, not least because it'd be a pain (literally!) to lug a six pack round the rest of the walk.

TheNaze73 · 05/12/2016 08:27

Always leave £20 out for postie, paperboy & bin men.

UptheAnty · 05/12/2016 08:59

Lots of food for thought here!
I think it is nice to spread the warm feeling and show appreciation - just not sure how to do it.
Lots of good ideas here

Thenaze

£20 each?

Carneddai · 05/12/2016 09:12

I prefer to give a gift than money. With money I feel like I'm paying him! With a gift I feel like I'm saying thanks.

coffeetasteslikeshit · 05/12/2016 09:16

I give the milkman a fiver in a card. Hadn't thought about the binmen, but now you mention it, I remember my mum used to give them something too.

Yoarchie · 05/12/2016 09:20

Postie no because we have so many different ones (at least 4 Confused)
Binmen no, they break the recycling tubs by throwing them and block our road by throwing tubs and bins in the middle of it (seen them do it). I take my stuff directly to the tip now rather than have them smash the containers (defeats the purpose of recycling if you have to keep getting new plastic boxes)
Don't have a window cleaner.
