Which books to ask for for DD?

OutnumberedByFurchesters · 03/12/2016 22:46

DD is to be 20months at Christmas.

Relatives are asking for Christmas present ideas. She loved her books, So thinking some books would be a good idea. 2years plus books, as she's loving that age range books at the moment :)

Any books that you can recommend, that I won't get bored of reading when she asks to read it for the 5th time in a day?! Nice pictures, ideally...and easily found by relatives on the internet, please :)

Oh and she loves ones with animals, cats especially. Thank you Xmas Grin

Slinky Malinki and the Hairy Maclary sets of books by Lynley Dodd were loved by dd.

Chocolatecake12 · 03/12/2016 22:54

Anything by Julia Donaldson
Hungry caterpillar

Fueledwithfairydustandgin · 03/12/2016 23:21

Big hits or books I've bought for this Christmas and flicked through that I think he'll love are
Complete book of farmyard tales
Room on the broom
Get out of my bath
Lunchtime
Open very carefully the book with a bite
What the ladybird heard
You're not so scary Sid
The tiger who came to tea
A million about tractors and diggers but wasn't sure that would be her thing?
Some of the books in the works 10 for £10 or 3 for £5 have been fantastic and are among out most read. When I've bought online I've been disappointed as some are a bit cheap but if I go in and browse you get great books. I can't remember their names off the top of my head but will remember to have a look in his bedroom.

Peace at last and whatever next. These were my favourites as a child and my DC all loved them too.
Guess how much I love you is a nice story.
Any of the Julia Donaldson books.
We are going on a bear hunt.

EsmeCordelia · 03/12/2016 23:23

Claude books.

EsmeCordelia · 03/12/2016 23:24

And That's not my.....books

Getnakedorgohome · 03/12/2016 23:25

My 2 yo currently loves 'You Choose' and 'Just Imagine' - he spends ages looking through them.

Other favourites are Charlie Cook's Favourite Book by Julia Donaldson, We're going on a bear hunt, any of the Paddington Bear stories and any of the 'Alfie' stories by Shirley Hughes

howcomes · 03/12/2016 23:34

Charlotte Voake has written some lovely books about cats - try Ginger finds a home, Ginger and the kitten and Ginger and the visitor. The pictures are wonderful.

Also Mog books are very good :)

SueDunome · 03/12/2016 23:35

Dear Zoo

SatsukiKusakabe · 03/12/2016 23:50

Second Whatever Next and Peace at last. Difficult to find other books as good, with that pace of story without being rhyming (I like Julia Donaldson, but nice to have a story too)

The Tiger Who Came to Tea

Tales from Acorn Wood lift the flap books by Julia Donaldson

The Pip and Posy books by Axel Shaeffler.

Mog is beloved here, as are the Alfie books by Shirley Hughes, particularly Alfie Gets in First and Alfie's Feet for that age.

AvaCrowder · 03/12/2016 23:54

Love you forever by Robert Munsch.

All the "that's not my...is too..."

Some of them are really funny.

SatsukiKusakabe · 04/12/2016 00:17

My dd really enjoys the That's not My... Books, but honestly I'd just get them out of the library if you can rather than have them as gifts. They are boring to read over and over and because they are so simple nice to have a variety of them.

ridingsixwhitehorses · 04/12/2016 00:35

Mine have recently loved:

Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell
Tabby McTat by Julia Donaldson
Pop! by Jude Rogers
The Election by Eleanor Levenson
Shark in the Park by Nick Sharrat
Socks by can't remember who
Oi Frog by Kes gray

Equimum · 04/12/2016 09:58

We have lots of story books from DS1 so have bought DS2 Trees:Seasons Come, Seasons Go and Bee, both by Britta Techentrump. They have lovely vivid illustrations and are written as stories, although they are actually factual. They make lovely gifts if you fancy something a bit different.

Equimum · 04/12/2016 09:58

Oh, and anything Oliver Jeffers.....'lost and found' has been the favourite here

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 04/12/2016 10:09

I am going to get a couple of the Lynley Dodd books for Gdd who will also be 20 months - probably Hairy Mclary and Schnitzel van Krumm (about the little dachshund who hates his new bed and wants his old one back!)

I love books in rhyme for this sort of age. I used to read some of the old Ladybird ones to a dd at 2 ish, over and over and over, and eventually she knew them by heart. I am sure the rhyming was a great plus at that age. Still have a couple of them - Downy Duckling and Bunny's First Birthday - such lovely pictures, too.

OutnumberedByFurchesters · 04/12/2016 22:17

Thanks for all the suggestions and help.

Some great ones here. And a lot I forgot about or hadn't heard of! Off to research and request. Xmas Grin

Me by Emma Dodd
Ten little fingers and ten little toes

But if you can get through either of them without crying you're doing better than me!

Mypoorhat · 04/12/2016 22:43

How to Hide a Lion is sweet and funny- one I'm happy to read again and again.
My two year old is fascinated by the Shirley's Hughes books, which have beautiful drawings: Alfie Gets In First, Don't Want To Go...
Agree with others about Oliver Jeffers: How to Catch a Star is lovely.
Oi Frog
I Want My Hat Back
Are also longstanding favourites and fun to read.

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 04/12/2016 23:09

Some favourites from my dd's at that age (now 8 and 4) and from working with that age group!

You choose
Sue hendra books - Keith the cat in the magic hat, supertato, Barry the fish with fingers
Dave's breakfast blast off
Penguin
Don't let the pigeon drive the bus (it's how you read it!)
Not so scary sid (and other variations)
We're going on a bear hunt
Kipper stories
Funnybones
Dear zoo
The dinosaur who pooped series
The fairytale hairdresser
That's not my...
The fish who could wish

Some festive ones
Dear santa
Father Christmas needs a wee
That's not my santa
Jesus's birthday party

But another nice gift would be audio books - you can get the set of Julia Donaldson ones on the book people for about £10. My daughters enjoyed listening to them while playing or at bedtime :)

OutnumberedByFurchesters · 04/12/2016 23:15

Ohhh I didn't know about the audio ones nocuts great idea.

Thanks to everyone too, her Bday soon in the new year too so I'll be refering back to this thread for a long while. Great suggestions :)

You are entering theJulia Donaldson years!

My 2 year old loves the Shirley Hughes Alfie books. A couple of other classics which are popular are the tiger who came to tea by Judith Kerr and each peach pear plum by Janet and Allen ahlberg.

Cagliostro · 05/12/2016 01:40

Tanka Tanka Skunk. A favourite in this house, we've been through three copies.

AnnieAnoniMouse · 05/12/2016 02:17

The Pip & Posy books - I love them. They have great illustrations & also a very cute 'moral' to them. They're a little naughty but very kind 'kids'. One of them is fab for toilet training..

Julia Donaldson - I like the Gruffalo series, but you can keep pretty much all of the others (Yes, even Snail in the bloody whale') as they go on & on! But I'm sure some of the others are more like the gruffalo.

Jill Murphy - The Large Family set of books.

Farmyard Tales - Usborne Books.

Hairy Maclary series

There's a bird on my head - Mo Willems

If they burnt every copy of 'On a bear hunt' it would be a good thing.
