I think my dd would love one of the American sweet hampers people are making, I ve seen a couple of bits in b&m I think but I'm not sure and can't really ask her without spoiling the surprise.
Could anyone give me tips on what to get and where is best to buy from. Thank you!!

Have a look in a big Tesco (ours has the huge marshmallows, Tootsie Rolls, Babe Ruth, Twinkie bars, all flavour Oreos)

There's an old fashioned style sweet shop (I think Mr Simms) that had Amercican sweets.
Reece bars, Reece Peanut Butter cups, Nerds, Jolly Rancher.

They are all £££££. Things like a pack of gum is £1.80ish.
And American chocolate is not good .

As an expat in the USA, please don't do this, American candy is gross and full of flavors and colors that are banned in the U.K.....

BradleyPooper · 03/12/2016 01:07

Sorry, my last post wasn't very helpful. We do eat Reece's peanut butter cups and they have Christmas tree shapes at the moment. There are special flavored m&ms (white chic and peppermint). The worst ones are atomic warheads, candies so sour that they take the skin off your tongue, yeuch!

NannyR · 03/12/2016 01:10

Hershey's "chocolate" is absolutely vile.

BradleyPooper · 03/12/2016 01:12

Yes it's vile. Fortunately we can get cadburys, Lindt etc and a whole range of free trade niche brands from Whole Foods so we don't have to suffer from Hershey's.

I'm also an expat in the US, and I agree with Bradley that it's not something I would do personally... What about a retro 70s / 80s sweet hamper instead? There are a few online places, but if you go to a really big supermarket and keep your eyes open in small corner shops you should be able to find plenty of different things for it.

If you do want to do the American theme, you could include

  • Swedish Fish
  • different flavour M&Ms
  • Reeces Pieces / Cups
  • Nerds
  • Lifesavers (Polos)
  • Junior Mints
  • Nutter Butter
  • Charleston Chews
  • Tootsie Rolls
  • Tootsie Pops
  • Dum Dum lollies

Jelly belly jelly beans are also popular in the USA, should be fairly easy to find in the U.K.

Poundworld have a good section of butterfingers bites, cookie dough bites, nerds etc, much cheaper than going to one of those candy stores!

Thank you all!

My DC are U.S. candy mad as are all their mates. The more I say how shit it is the more they want. Apparently we were the same when little,U.S. candy is mesmerising when young.Confused With that in mind and the fact it's Christmas I embraced it.

WH Smiths have an end of aisle range but yes it can be pricey. I bought tiny boxes of popcorn Jelly Belly beans cheaply though. They were by the tills. Our Spar has started selling the bars cheaply and Sainsbos is selling the Reece's Xmas tree bars for 60p. Sainsbos( on Us grocery stand)and Wilkos had plastic cups of US pick and mix candy for a couple of pound. Sainsbos sells Reece's pieces in the chic aisle( Reece's is particularly popular). I did buy some bits from US candy sites. You can get cheap things for 1 or 2 pounds- candy cane tic tacs, Santa bubble gum, novelty lollies etc. It sells out quick though. Last year I bought Lucky Charms cereal cups from WH Smith as they filled up stockings( quite bulky).

My DC want jars of hideous Reece's peanut butter and some kind of fluff stuff. I drew the line at that. Would be hanging around for ages. Don't mind them being radio active over Xmas/ Boxing Day but after that it's back to normality.

GreenGinger2 · 03/12/2016 08:36

choc aisle.

Whatthefreakinwhatnow · 03/12/2016 08:37

I did this last year, Amazon do them ready made and the individual sweets to make your own!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 03/12/2016 09:03

I was going to stamp my feet, my Sainsburys doesn't have a chic aisle Xmas Wink

B and M had pre filled cups of american sweets when I was in there last week, they were only a few pounds. They also had the small single serves of lucky charms as well. Loads of american stuff to be found near us but I agree about the additives, I was shocked when I read the ingredient list!

Geepee71 · 03/12/2016 19:38

Wilcos also have some pre-made reasonably priced American sweet gift sets.

bigredfireengine · 03/12/2016 19:42

Poundland has an american sweet section in ours. It is on an end not with the other sweets. All £1 obviously!

LongHardStare · 03/12/2016 19:53

Love anything Reese's - where's the best place to get without paying a fortune though? Could do an entire hamper of just peanut butter related sweets... mmm

bigredfireengine · 03/12/2016 20:04

Pound world not pound land for the american sweets

IHaveBrilloHair · 03/12/2016 20:11

My DD loves anything Reeces, I buy from Tesco or Amazon.

originalmavis · 03/12/2016 20:13
