Working over Christmas

Afishcalledchips · 02/12/2016 19:21

I thought we could have a thread to moan discuss how we're going to make the best of it.

I work as a carer, and have short (2-3hours) shifts on
Christmas eve (morning and night)

Christmas day (night)
Boxing day (morning and night)

I'm so gutted I have to work, and I really hate my job as it is Xmas Sad

I think > Xmas Sad < is the most depressing little emoji. It really sums up all my self pity though Xmas Grin

Oh no,I used to work in care before I had my DC'S.
My work also used to put us on a similar Rota where everybody came in,but only a few hours.
I used to offer my whole day so others with dc's could spend the whole day at home with family if they wished.then I would get extra pay for a whole days work,so it was win-win.
do you have anybody at work with no dc who could do with the extra money who could take your shift on for you? (If you don't need the money yourself).

PinkiePiesCupcakes · 02/12/2016 19:35

My OH is a carer, they wanted her to do all day but she's talked them down to her doing 2 hours, 8am-10am.
Not as bad as it could be but we have a 3.7yo who won't want to wait to open gifts so OH will miss it. :(

TheTartOfAsgard · 02/12/2016 19:42

Me too. I'm working every day from the 19th to the 27th (shorter 6 hour shifts on 25/26th).

Even worse is that I work in a holiday resort so will be surrounded by happy families whilst mine sit at home without me Sad

Afishcalledchips · 02/12/2016 19:56

I work privately for someone who gets direct payments, and the rota 'conveniently' fell like that, the only other member of staff (has grown up DC) had refused point blank to do any of my Christmas shifts. Guess who made the rota.

Oh tart that's horrible

My dp is warehouse and expected to work Christmas eve and day he won't be as baby is due Christmas day

Chansey · 02/12/2016 20:11

I'm a midwife. I am working Christmas Day. I would rather work Christmas Day than Boxing Day. It will be essential visits only and everyone makes an effort and there is cameraderie because it's Christmas. Boxing Day is always hectically busy and without the atmosphere.

elfontheshelfstolemychristmas · 02/12/2016 20:12

Flowers to you all. Up until last week I worked for the NHS and faced working Christmas Day, fortunately my new job means I dont but I still feel for you all xx

DameXanaduBramble · 02/12/2016 20:12

I know it sucks but he'll have to go if the baby is late arriving.

natdee · 02/12/2016 21:53

I work in the NHS and I'm working Christmas Eve (shorter shift than normal probally 8-5/6) then I'm back Christmas Day 9-2 then on call until 8pm .... Oh I'm also working NYE but managed to take a days holiday for New Year's Day Smile

Afishcalledchips · 02/12/2016 23:24

Aww pinkiepies I guess you'll either have to wake super early to open gifts before, or try to save them for later. At least at that age they're more willing to go along with new patterns for the day. And it's just the two hours.

princess what, your DP works in a warehouse on Christmas day!? Xmas Shock surely people can wait an extra day for a bloody parcel so that the staff can be with their families.

I'm thinking I've just got to try to make the most of the time I am home, and really plan well around it so that I'm not stressed and upset about having to work.

That's rubbish you're,on morning AND night

MrsDilligaf · 02/12/2016 23:49

If DH gets the promotion he is going for he'll be working 07.30 - 21.00 Christmas Day Xmas Sad he's gutted because he feels like if he gets the jov (quite likely...) he has effectively "opted out" of DD's first Christmas. He knows that she won't know (she'll be 10 months at Christmas) and that we can do our own Christmas on another day, but he can't shake off the feeling it makes him a bad dad.

popcornpaws · 03/12/2016 08:00

I work in retail and its just your luck what days your contracted if it falls on christmas eve, boxing day etc.
This year i will be working Christmas eve, we don't actually know when we are finishing, store closes at 7pm but we might be working until 9pm!!!!
Im off boxing day but will be working hogmany and new years day.

We are given overtime sheets to fill out in september stating what overtime you will be doing over the month leading up to and after christmas.
Once you have handed the sheet back you can't then say, actually somethings come up and i can't do that shift after all, and if you can't do overtime for any reason you would be taken to the office for a chat about teamwork and a reminder of your contracts terms and conditions.
But they have a secret santa and you can wear a christmas jumper to work...

MrsRyanGosling15 · 03/12/2016 08:07

I'm working 1.45pm to 8.30 pm Christmas day. 1st year all 3 kids believe and get what's happening. I'm so pissed off. I have worked every bloody Christmas day since I qualified. And I'm working with horrible people and very sick patients so it won't even be fun. Plus I'm very pregnant and emotional. I just know I will be crying in the toilets at one point! I hate hate hate being a nurse at Christmas, especially when the kids don't understand why I'm leaving. Dh also on call in theater. Please god he's not called in when I'm working.

InTheDessert · 03/12/2016 08:21

DH working 25, 26, 27, 28, 29.
I've got 2 very excited kids, as we've told them there is a special agreement that Santa will despatch an elf with a stocking 24 hrs early, as Christmas will be celebrated a day early.
Then, since we're not in Europe, I will take the kids to the fairground on Xmas day. And it should be quiet, as all the local kids will be at school, and all the expat kids will have flown home, or be opening presents.

Diggingupdaisys · 03/12/2016 08:22

Nye night this year plus night 23rd and a few between so constant exhaustion over holidays. I did Xmas night last year. Xmas Envy. Never fun very high stressed fast paced unit. I do 12.5 hour shifts.

Afishcalledchips · 03/12/2016 09:02

I used to work in a retail as a teen, and loved working Christmas eve, it was hectic but everyone was so happy. Then boxing day we'd be so quiet that we just sat around talking. This was pre bonkers sales obviously.

The man I care for now is horrible and really quite rude sometimes, so don't want to spend that precious time with him instead of my family, even if it is double pay. In fact sometimes I feel like he's such a nasty and selfish person he deserves to just stay in bed all day so I can have the days off. I'm sure that sounds terrible.
