I don't think there is any "norm".
It wasn't the norm to have an Elf until fairly recently.
We put up the calendar together (a thing I made when pregnant with DS, a Christmas baby). We don't do elf, don't have a Christmas Eve hamper, don't visit a store/garden centre FC, don't do ice skating/Christmas market, don't have Christmas bedding, don't have a North Pole breakfast.
I don't want to come across as bashong anyone who does do some or all of the above, I just think our Christmas is magical enough. Plus I don't have either the spare cadh for all that or the will power to organise so much - and neither does DH.
We have the tree, the lights, thevdecs (soooooo many decs!), dvds, biccy-making, crafts, walks in the woods in the evening with a torch collecting pine cones etc, hot chocolate, candy cane reindeer....
