Any recommendations for a lightweight bike. Dd 2 struggled to pedal the one dd1 learnt on so I'm looking for a lightweight reasonably priced one.

Halfords are currently doing 50% off kids bikes... I'm not sure if the lightweight wiggins ones are included or not though :-)

Another vote for frogs, you could probably pick up a preowned one for budget in great condition. Another one we looked at if you don't mind v gendered bikes is decathlon, I think they do a princess one and a pirate one. They have stabilisers that can be removed without tools and the brakes are designed for kids so nice and light.

So Dd 1 age 7 got a Frog bike last year for her 6th birthday, it's the 52 one and was about £235 new with a £30 off voucher. Dd2 ( 4 but tall) had grown out of her Cnoc 14 but I didn't want to have two bikes the same so have just got her an Islabike beinn 20 secondhand on eBay. I set up an alert and sniper with a maximum price and just waited till I got one in range. It took about 3 weeks. I've also just sold her old Islabike for the same price as I bought it.

Our Isla bike was £90 second hand, I looked for a long time and got it the week before Christmas. It was immaculate bar a few scuffs from being ridden but had been well looked after. And re stabilisers, the reason we got an Isla was that DD got on a friends' one to try and within 5 mins was riding without stabilisers and she doesn't ride much, it wasn't that she's a good cyclist. They are so light and well balanced that the idea is they won't need stabilisers (although you can get the quick release ones for them).

Searched my town & the next town for 2nd hand frog bikes and isla bikes but no luck

Does anyone happen to know if there are any balance bikes for 5yo's I know shes a bit big for them but she loves the one at school. The bike within my budget is a decathlon one it weighs 9.2kg so heavier than the frogs & islas. I'm confused as I desperately want to get her a bike Confused but no idea which sort that's within budget.

DS1 has a carrera from Halfords. Same weight as an Isla or Frog but half the price. He absolutely loves it and was riding without stabilisers in ten minutes.

Something like this OP. Honestly, despite what the majority of MN would have you believe, you don't need to drop £250 to get a decent, lightweight kids bike.

confusednortherner · 27/11/2016 21:09

Are you Facebook? There is a pretended Isla and Frog group on there.

adagio · 27/11/2016 21:11

We were looking at frog or Isla for my dd 4th birthday, we have actually got a pinnacle from Evans instead. Feels light, well balanced with proper small sized brakes etc. Pinnacle is Evans own brand but seems good - and was a better fit for her than frog (we did test drive, prefer to lose the surprise than cock up and buy one she can't use)

I wouldn't get too bogged down by not being able to afford a Frog or Isla bike OP. She won't be on it for too long before she needs another one!

We cycle a lot, our ten year old happily does 30 miles a day on our touring holidays ..... she currently has a small ladies frame but until this bike has always had ridgebacks and they are more than fine.

True that you don't get as much back on them as you would an isla bike but they are a lot less cash new. I have always got 50% of what I paid back.

Charming pink colour here Grin, why do they do that ???? I have bought from Tredz before - lots of other places online. 7.4 kg.

not saying that looks ideal. It's much more affordable for me too. Thanks for everyone's advice/recommendations Flowers

Can't beat an Isla bike!

Nyancat · 28/11/2016 08:15

Op so glad you found one. You said up thread about a balance bike, maybe someone has already said but we just removed the pedals from DDS bike for a few weeks and she used it like a balance bike. Once she was used to it we just put the pedals back on and she took off without stabilisers.

BikeRunSki · 28/11/2016 08:56

There are dedicated FB selling pages for Preowned Islabikes and Preowned Frog bikes. At 5, your DD would probably need at Cnoc 16 or a Beinn 20.

A week ago I had a Beinn 20 Large for sale in West Yorkshire!!!!

Decathlon also sell very good bikes for the money, and are cheaper than Isla and Frog, but you do get what you pay for with bikes and weight (or lack of) comes at a premium. In this case quality second hand trumps new but poorer quality.

pineappleeyes · 28/11/2016 09:07

Can the pedals be removed from all bikes? That would be ideal.

OP posts:
BikeRunSki · 28/11/2016 09:29

Pretty much. You may need a pedal spanner (very slimline spanner) but any bike shop could do it.

Figgygal · 28/11/2016 09:32

My DS went from never having had a bike except for using ones at preschool to being able to ride by himself in three weeks on his frog bike which we bought in the summer. He might of been a natural but I think the bike has helped it was miraculous. I cannot recommend them highly enough I know you said budget wise that would be tough but I second other posters in looking for a secondhand one

HowToTrainYour · 28/11/2016 12:58

It depends on what you're using the bike for?
My 7yr old is riding 16km blue routes at trail centres so he needa a good bike. We chose Islabike.

HowToTrainYour · 28/11/2016 13:00

If it was just a toy for the street/occasional bike ride in the park then he would have a much cheaper one.
We are a family of bike riders and go out often on long rides and biking holidays each year.
