Help! Craft stuff for a 12 year old?

Hoping you can help.

My 12 year old niece loves making things. I was thinking of getting her a craft set - maybe a jewellery making kit or something like that? But all the things I can find seem aimed at younger kids. Has anyone seen anything that might suit a 12 year old, please?

Thanks!

What about a 3D pen? They seem to be a popular thing on xmas lists for my dds friends this year

Have a look at The Works lots of choice

I'd go for stuff aimed at adults (I have a similar child and don't buy her children's kits any more).

Get a set of findings, beads and basic tools from eBay

Quilling is fun. How about an easel, canvas and some acrylics or watercolours and a pad of suitable paper x

Lots of crafting kits in Hobbycraft - I like the look of some of the felting stuff.

Kirsty allsop craft kits are good and more mature (and kitsch)

Oooh, lots of ideas...thanks all! I'll sit down and check out all the options after DD goes to bed.

I'll have a look at some adult kits too but DN is very young for her age...she turned 12 recently and wanted Aquabeads for her birthday because she loves playing with my 4 year old's set.

Latchhook kits are fun, and can be made into cushions

Or Decopatch - a pot of glue, some pretty papers and papier mache blanks to cover

I loved cross stitch when I was a tween/teen. Maybe something like that?

MeMyElfandI · 19/11/2016 18:18

I also rate the decoupage from hobby craft. Also for my 13 year old I have ordered Djeco craft kits from Brightminds. Not cheap but lovely. Lots of different ones. Last year she had a silk scarf painting kit and this year I am getting her their embroidery kit.

Calligraphy? My daughter started younger than 12, taught herself, and the interest grew with her, with beautiful results. An interest to last a lifetime.

How about a large amount of coloured paper pref cut to smallish rectangles and instructions on how to do 3D origami. (Google 3d paper origami to see some amazing creations!) example

HatePaperDoll · 19/11/2016 20:30

More great ideas! I'm not at all crafty so some of these would never have occurred to me.

I absolutely love the Calligraphy idea, Beaverlac. I wish I'd learned to do it.

Djeco sand art kits are gorgeous. Also Fimo - blocks of coloured modelling clay. I bought dd a giant sketch pad from Tiger for a tenner last year and she's asked for that again.

Beaverlac · 30/11/2016 23:51

Just seen a Prima magazine article on gifts for crafters, which mentions a calligraphy set from M&S. £25, in their 3 for 2 offer.

jaxxyj · 30/11/2016 23:53

My daughter loved the candle making kit I got her last year
