What do you actually DO Xmas day...?

Ok, usually I spend Xmas day with my parents, brother, sister, their partners and children. The kids all play with their toys together, we eat a huge Xmas dinner then loaf about drinking chatting playing uno etc.

Well this year our circumstances have changed a little and it will just be me, DH and DS12. I love love love Xmas for the family time and I just feel at a bit of a loss with what we will actually do during the day. DS feels he's too 'old' for toys as presents so won't have anything to play with and keep him entertained.
I guess I don't want it to just turn into a standard Sunday type of day...
Ideas? What do you guys do?

Don't worry tweedle Thanks 5 is a wonderful age at Christmas. Think of all the fantastic traditions you can start just the two of you!

Make some plans such as a late morning walk, and an afternoon film and base the day around it. Toys like lego or playmobil, a craft set etc would be great to do together.

franksidebottom · 11/11/2016 13:50

I'm sure it'll be special tweedle, you can do what you want, when you want, maybe ask your Ds is there anything he would like to do on the day.

This is our 3rd Christmas since our dd was born and the first time she'll really have a clue what's going on.

My mum will stay over on christmas eve & my brother & his wife and my MIL are all coming for dinner so in the morning I'll get up and walk the dog. Then it's presents follow by breakfast and everyone getting ready.

Hopefully go for another nice walk then prepare food, eat food, and then most people will leave about 7pm so we can get dd to bed, get into our pj's and then crash in front of the tv.

Thank you cream cracker and frank.

My anxiety fluctuates daily when I think about it hahah.

I just hope ds finds it special enough!

Wake up - gift opening
Breakfast/nibbling on sweets
Put together toys
play board games
Eat indulgent food/drink Shirley temples
Cook dinner/make dessert (has to be done same day)
Watch a Christmas show
FaceTime some family
Eat dinner!

That is about it really - the slothdom is even better on Boxing Day Grin

FixItUpChappie · 13/11/2016 05:32

in terms of what you could do OP?...

Nice breakfast, go skating/sledding/country walk (something of that nature), hot chocolate/Christmas show, board games, fantastic dinner...sounds good to me Smile

Xmas in our family is always fun, its one of the few days a year we all get together. It goes something like this:

Wake up
Awful Xmas music on full!
Stockings
Shovel in breakfast whilsts playing with stocking presents
Presents
Someone shoves turkey ect in oven
'Big' presents
Crap xmas film/finishing sorting dinner/fighting over mirrors to do makeup & Hair
Eat at about 1:30pm
Chill out time/hunt down batteries for Toys/washing up
Walk Dog!
Taxi to Aunties for Extended family party @ 4pm(ish)
Wine
Family Presents
Boardgames/Movies/Toys
Doctor Who!!!
Supper - Cheeseboard/Pork Pie/Cold meats
More wine :D
General Family chatter and spending time together until the early hours of the morning, often includes Cards Against Humanity and singing.

Boxing day is usually spent chilling in Xmas Jumpers watching Films/Box sets and setting up new 'techy' presents.

We decamp to the in laws with the dogs and stay there Christmas Eve and Christmas night. They live all of 15mins away but it means a lot to MIL that she has a houseful first thing Christmas morning.

We eat lunch about 1.30pm depending on how soon FIL gets the BBQ going then spend the afternoon drinking and playing board games or bocce.

Once it gets dark the neighbours wander over for drinks and nibbles round the fire pit then it's bed time at some point after midnight. The kids all sleep in tents and BIL usually brings his swag so he can sleep outside too.

Boxing Day I cook breakfast then watch any new DVDs we've got and read any new books. Boxing Day night we go to the local pub to listen to the live music.

It's totally different to the English way of celebrating Christmas but we love it :)

Try to supervise so my extended Irish / Spanish / Jewish family don't kill each other. Sibling rivalry never gets old apparently - even when you are, um, older Grin

Aebj · 15/11/2016 02:48

Ds ( 13 & 11) come down to our room to open stockings
Then we go to the lounge skype both parents ( so kids grandparents), they get to watch the boys open a present each.
Pack car up and go to the beach for breakfast and swim ( paddle)
Return home veg, last year we had a roast but sometimes we just have salad stuff, wine, veg in pool.
We live in Australia so christmas day it's in the 30's and sunny.
Just a chilled out day

gleam · 15/11/2016 10:15

Queen - how about a 'doing' present for your ds? Not a toy, as he doesn't want them, but still something to get on with.
Maybe a calligraphy set or engraving pen? Modelling clay? Something he's perhaps not tried before.

SecretPeanut · 15/11/2016 10:21

It's just me and my OH this year.
Wake up
Go and muck out the horses and sort out other animals. Yes we do this on Christmas Day too! Smile
Ride the horses
Go home shower
Breakfast
Prezzies
Bit of TV
Lunch
Go bring horses in and put to bed
Film
Drinks in the evening
Sleep.

Or we go away somewhere hot and leave Christmas at home

thingsthatgoflumpinthenight · 15/11/2016 11:53

We open presents, eat and drink too much and veg out in front of whatever is on TV. And snooze probably.

Can't wait Smile

heron98 · 15/11/2016 13:07

I am on my own and go to my parents' for Christmas.

I get up and run to theirs (about 13 miles) so that I have room for my xmas dinner! Get there about lunchtime, do presents and then usually go for a walk in the woods with my sister and nieces. Dinner at about 6 and then lounge around chatting

DeleteOrDecay · 15/11/2016 16:02

Dc come into our room with their stockings. They open them in bed then after a short time of looking at the stocking gifts etc we head downstairs and make a start of present opening. Dc do theirs first then we do ours. The rest of the morning is then filled with helping dc get their new toys out/cleaning up the chaos. Along side Christmas TV/films.

We eat at around 3ish.

Doesn't seem like much but the day always flies by.
