How do you get your house looking Christmassy?

We always have the Xmas tree with lights etc and few xmas candles but the house never really feels Christmassy! How do you decorate your houses/living rooms to get that warm cosy and well decorated Christmas feel to it? Any ideas or your must haves? Any photos for inspiration?

Loads of lights are the way to go!! I put a garland with attached lights around the fireplace which gives the living room a lovely feel along with the tree.

I also get loads of the battery candles and tea lights, and put them in the hall, porch. It's a lovely effect and I know it's safe from prying little hands!!

Love all the photos on here!

This thread isn't helping I've had OCOD (obsessive Christmas Ornament Disorder) and I'm trying to decide if it's reasonable to order the M & S Christmas duvet.

WhilkandMisky · 31/10/2016 07:14

Matalan have some gorgeous Christmas decorations at the minute, really reasonable too.

infinitesheldon

I'd say it's perfectly acceptable Xmas Grin

InfiniteSheldon M&S reduced all the Christmas range last year a couple of weeks before if you want to try and hold your nerve?

Soft white twinkly lights and a real tree

Ilovetorrentialrain · 31/10/2016 21:03

One think I always do Is put a large gold plate on the coffee table with a jar candle in the middle and surround it with satsumas, gold choc coins and nuts and nut cracker.

I use small strings of fairly lights everywhere. Woven into foliage on the mantelpiece, through a wreath on the banister, on the card holder etc.

Some fab ideas on here especially changing cushions and throws. Might start doing that.

EnidButton · 31/10/2016 21:45

Your festive plate sounds gorgeous Ilove I might pinch that idea. Smile

I've never had proper Christmassy throws and cushions but when the clocks go back I do bring the faux fur throws out and a couple of chunky knit ones. Makes it cosy.

Definitely take away your usual decorations and replace with Christmas ones xx we only moved into our house last year so we had to do a minimum bulk buy of the basics. This year I'm hoping to adventure further around the house with decorations 😊

Apart from the tree, I have a few knick knacks that I use only at Christmas, and I like to light candles and use greenery liberally. I keep a 'silver' plate stocked with cookies, and I have a bowl of sugared almonds. Nobody likes to eat them but me, so they remain very decorative for a long time. I also keep a bowl of red/orange apples out.

We put up a nativity scene on the mantelpiece - my mum gave me a nice one a few years ago.

I make my own house scent with lemon and other citrus peel, rosemary, cinnamon, cloves, vanilla and any other nice scents I can think of. I use a little sauce-warmer bowl that came with my crock pot to simmer the concoction in. I think a Christmas scent is very important.

Love this thread, making me feel very Christmassy! I normally use lights, throws, candles and a few decorative bits like a lovely reindeer ornament etc. Not sure we will manage to put it all out this year due to the puppy!!

handsfree · 01/11/2016 06:20

I can't wait til my youngest is a bit older and will t just destroy everything I put out! This year I'll be mainly focused on decorating he ceiling!

My Christmas bits and bobs

How do you get your house looking Christmassy?
smellylittleorange · 01/11/2016 07:44

Add lots of fairy lights and natural greenery...I'm really pleased with my mini birch tree it is so pretty. For fairy lights I get mine from lightsforfun ..best range ever

Chinnygirl · 01/11/2016 07:54

Christmas candles, tableclothes, paintings, cross stitch wallhangings, tree, candles, ornaments, cups and saucers, dinnerplates, bowls, throws and cushions.

I have been buying christmas decorations since I was eight so I'm a bit OTT with the stuff...

You can take the baubles further than the tree, I have those bauble hangers from IKEA as I have waaaaaay too many baubles for one tree (well actually I have two trees usually, one in the hall and one upstairs in the living room Blush)

So on nearly every surface I have baubles and then table lights strewn underneath them to make them glow.

I have a very plain minimalist house with french windows everywhere so I hang IKEA snowballs on every window, and then I have huge tinsel twig long swags which I think I bought in The Range when I lived in the UK. I hang those around door frames and thread them with red and white star lights. Then I hang more wooden baubles and decorations onto the twigs.

We also have a playmobile Christmas scene area with nativity, woodland, Christmas market etc that DS and his friend love to assemble and display on one of the sideboards. It's tacky but I love it and it keeps DS occupied and away from ruining my tree decorating (I really love doing it myself)

BiddyPop · 01/11/2016 14:08

Our tree has 3 sets of lights on it. A load of tinsel and loads of glittery ornaments, and quite a few different, more muted nature-y type ones too.

I have various tealight holders on the mantelpiece, and an aromatherapy burner too, and often have up to 6 candles dancing on the mantelpiece over the roaring wood fire in the stove. And we have a fleece blanket which has a Santa in his sleigh scene, which comes out for December as well, on 1 armchair.

We used to put up glittery garlands, but not always.

There is a wooden crib scene carved from 2 different tree trunks that fits together (2 different shades of wood, I presume the bits not used in our set made an opposite crib for someone else) - that goes on the drinks cabinet. I also have a snowglobe up there.

We have a larger crib that we sometimes put in the hall - but it takes up the whole table so DMIL borrowed it last year.

DD has a hanging santa twirler on the stairs up to the attic, and a few snowglobes and stuff up there too. We sometimes put snowflake stickers on her windows as well. And she has a Santa duvet cover set on her bed which she loves.

In the kitchen, I have some more candles, and some of DD's artwork stuck to the fridge and windows. I usually have fresh flowers of some description in here too. I also have a Christmas apron, and Christmas teatowels and hand towels, which are on display (and used!). A few Christmas mugs gathered over the years (totally mismatched and kitsh-y, but I love them!) get used frequently. And I change the placemats from regular blue ones to gold mats in the middle and big red charger mats at each place.

Just been browsing Pinterest and there are some amazing ideas on there and interior pictures for inspiration. Home magazines at this time of year are brilliant for ideas too. Ideal home have their separate Christmas mag out now.

oobedobe · 01/11/2016 22:55

I use lots of bits and bobs; Handsewn Merry Christmas banner above the sliding doors, Christmassy table cloth, large poinsetta on the table.

On the shelves, wreath, lights.

Felt advent calendar on the wall. I have some big hanging stars in silver and white that I hang from the ceiling they are good, two in the bay window and one above the sofa.

Then Christmas tree in the corner with tree skirt, then more lights and knick knacks on the sideboard.

Wreath on the front door, along with a potted christmas plant (evergreens and some sparkle).

Just lots of different bits, I think I have enough now so I am careful not to buy any more unless I love something.

I try to stick to mainly red, white and silver but not in a very matchy matchy way, just enough to have some cohesion.
