Family board/card game recommendations

Last year I got DD1 (8) a card game called Sushi Go after it was recommended on here & we LOVE it!! I would never have come across it without being recommended. We take it on holiday and play at home.

here it is: www.amazon.co.uk/Sushi-Go-Pick-Pass-Card/dp/B01KJKORR2

So what other games are good for adults but also for children - so the whole family can play them?

I'd like to get one or 2 for us for Xmas, and I will be buying Sushi Go as a gift for someone else.

I thought games might be worth their own thread.

We love qwirkle and Labyrinth but have lost a card for Labyrinth so it's now unplayable.

Hugely popular in our house is Bird Bingo. We play it when other families come over as there are quite a few boards and you can choose to shorten it or play a full version.

Miloarmadillo1 · 22/10/2016 08:12

Another vote for Qwirkle.

Yes Labrynth big hit here too. Kids 13 and 12 still play it.

How old do they play Bird Bingo happily. Love the illustrations but think I'd be buying it for me.Blush

we love dixit here. Also the card game Gubs
We also have settlers of Catan - but gets quite competitive when our older dc play, Forbidden island is a nice co-operative one.
Also have sleeping queens, monster cafe and exploding kittens amongst others.
I've got one of the dc sushi go for Christmas. A also getting Ticket to Ride.

5 second rule's a favourite here Smile

I agree Uno for a family game. Another couple of really good ones are Triominoes, which is triangular dominoes so you have to match at least two numbers, different and fun. The other is Upwords, similar to scrabble but you change and add to words by putting letters before, after and on top. More inventive and easier for younger players too. Love board games! Good luck

As a child/teen/ young adult I played so many games as well as cards (not gambling). When I moved to the uk that all stopped.
In 22 years I've not associated with people who play games.

It was quite exciting to find people on mn talking about them. Also now the kids are getting bigger, I have grown my own in house competitors. Go me!

King of Tokyo is fun - a board game but not lots of faff to set up. Ideal for family.

Cagliostro · 22/10/2016 19:00

Board/card games are my favourite thing.

We have over 170 Blush

LaChatte · 23/10/2016 19:17

6yo DD. &14yo DS here, we/they regularly play:

Exploding kittens
Dobble
Time's up
Monopoly
Trivial pursuit (with cards adapted for respective ages)
Pictionary
Rush hour

Pancakeflipper · 23/10/2016 19:36

Got Dobble last year after high praise on here - was hilarious and played throughout the holiday period by all visiting guests. The 7 yr old was a whizz at it.

Thinking about Exploding Kittens - is that suitable for 7yrs + ?

LaChatte · 23/10/2016 19:44

Exploding kittens is fine from about 6 upwards.

Aliveinwanderland · 23/10/2016 19:51

Sequence is a big family favourite here

Rapidough is our favourite game. Appropriate for all ages, takes no time at all to explain how to play and lasts just the right amount of time.

Our other favourite game is Would I lie to you? as we love the TV programme. You have to be in the right mood to play it but it's good fun. It's harder to bluff a lie than you'd think.

Mercedes519 · 23/10/2016 20:06

I'd second UNO extreme, a bit more fun and unpredictable than the standard version.

For simple games we love Looping Louie. Simple but effective...

Am off to look up these games to avoid playing Monopoly ever again

firawla · 24/10/2016 18:21

If anyone likes strategic ones then othello and Callisto are great, best for age around 7+ but younger ones can do it with a bit of help too
