Any good ideas for an 8 year old boy?

Main present; budget £50-60.
He has put an Xbox on his list but despite them being in budget (2nd hand) I really don't want to get him one. He has a wii, a ds and a kindle fire which I think is enough.
We don't have tv channels with adverts so he hasn't seen anything to be impressed by and put on his list. His list is things like new goalie gloves, not a 'thing'
He's football mad and loves being active. We have a garden but he doesn't go out much in winter so nothing that needs to wait for warm weather to be enjoyed.
Any ideas of a really cool, fun toy that he will genuinely play with for more than 5 minutes?
Thanks!

I have an 8 year old!

Does yours have his own desk? Mine loved his desk and chair and it's had great use. I stuffed it with paper, pens etc and put one of those newton's cradles on top. I wasn't sure how excited he'd be to receive it, but he was over the moon.

A few other ideas:
Pogo stick
Grown up looking pop up tent & 'survival' bag
Telescope (but spend a little more and get a proper entry level one rather than the ones from the toy department)
Decent binoculars (as with the telescope, buy proper ones)
A (musical) keyboard - if you can stand it Wink

My DS has just had his 8th birthday and we bought him an archery set. He is absolutely thrilled to bits with it...as is the rest of the family! The arrows have suction pads so we can play it inside or out. Great fun!

This is the archery set we bought my DS. It's from Decathlon.

what about
-board games
-science sets, crystal growing, volcano sets, funky experiment sets
-beginners robotics set
-Lego
-stomp rocket
-demolition lab sets
-playmobil
-models
-puzzles
-Track builders for hotwheels

I remember my brother building vast complex Lego/GI Joe compounds in his room for years beyond 8 - I think those type of toys can have long reaching interest....considering how excited my husband was at the thought of buying Star Wars Lego sets to build with our eldest son Grin

oh also - Magformers are pretty awesome - very expensive but really good quality and I'm eyeing up a set that comes with RC boxes to turn creations into remote control vehicles.
