DD 20 loves Xmas and thought she might like a weekend at a nice city with a Xmas market

Edinburgh is lovely. If it gets too hectic, you can nip up to Harvey Nichols Forth Floor for a seasonal beverage and watch the skating from a safe distance.

toopeoply · 04/08/2016 02:58

Definitely Edinburgh. You must include a cocktail at The Dome and the Festival of light on the Royal Mile too.

Erm, sorry I didn't like Bath Christmas market at all. No atmosphere. Few stalls and quite boring.

There was a choir there singing Christmas Carols that no one had heard of and boy was the choir master pleased with himself.

The look on one shopper's face was, 'what is this shit ?'

Cologne Christmas market was truly fantastic. I'd love to go to York or Edinburgh or Birmingham.

Manchester, until Brexit is done, in which case I don't know how easy it would be for the French, German and italian traders. There is a big french market, a big huge gigantic german market and a european market. Markets are in Cathedral Gardens, St Annes Square, Albert Square, King St ,Brazzenosse st and market st x

Fabulous suggestions thanks!!!
We could fly to Edinburgh... although Heidelberg looks lovely.

Manchester.

But 'Christmas markets' are the same every year. If you've seen one, you've seen them all. Wouldn't surprise me if half the stock for Manchester is stored under the town hall somewhere and trotted out each November. Its always the same stuff.

Northernlurker · 04/08/2016 09:58

York gets unpleasantly busy too.

Savagebeauty · 04/08/2016 10:16

Yes I find York a bit claustrophobic.

York, Leeds are good

Any in/near London/Essex?

I've been to the South Bank which is nice enough, walk by the river.

Winter Wonderland, been 3 times, not going again.

What's Borough Market like at Christmas?

DownstairsMixUp · 04/08/2016 19:16

Canterbury is nice, usually does one every year.

candykane25 · 04/08/2016 19:19

Manchester Christmas market is enormous. Albert square is the main hub with others in st Ann's square and exchange square. Beazenisevstreet and King street have outdoor Italian and French cafes and stalls. Spinning fields tends to have an ice rink and hot cocktail bars. It's all pretty cool. Recommend weekdays and earlier in the day for Albert square, it gets rammed by midday.

Downstairs would you recommend Canterbury? DD1 will be studying there this year and I plan to go to visit her. It will be even better if I can fit in a visit to a Christmas Market too.

couldntlovethebearmore · 04/08/2016 19:34

Birmingham is brilliant and local to me but deffo going to visit Bath this year I really wanted to go last year but had baby early December

proudnewMNaddict · 04/08/2016 19:37

Manchester's are brilliant. But given the threat of terrorism and random attacks hanging over the west at the moment I won't be attending any at all Confused

Savagebeauty · 04/08/2016 19:57

Well random attacks won't stop me having fun Grin

Lincoln!

DesperatelySeeking2016 · 05/08/2016 22:49

Winchester has a lovely Christmas market but it does get crazy busy at weekends.

DownstairsMixUp · 05/08/2016 22:51

Yes it's lovely at Xmas. I study there to. Grin

Paperblank · 06/08/2016 13:44

Edinburgh is by far my favourite. We spent a happy half hour in Jenners cafe watching the skaters fall over

Whenever we've been it's been bloody freezing, which is no bad thing since you can warm up with a mulled cider Grin

Davros · 07/08/2016 09:05

Look up Cathedrals Express, you could get a steam train to a Christmas market in a lovely cathedral city. It's on my bucket list, never managed to do it.
Borough Market is nice at Xmas, especially if you book a table st Roast! Best is to start at Waterloo in a sunny cold day and walk there along the river or the other way round

Rowboat · 13/08/2016 09:34

Definitely Edinburgh. Went to Birmingham once and it was fine, but didn't have the magical atmosphere you get in Edinburgh. We go at least once a year. On the bus so we can have some gluwein. Ooh very excited now.

elQuintoConyo · 28/08/2016 00:10

Lincoln, Canterbury or Brugge if yiu can get across the Channel. 1 hour's drive from Calais. Gorgeous. Freezing!

yougottheshining · 28/08/2016 00:15

Any Xmas market I've been to has consisted of stall after stall selling overpriced tat, overpriced shit booze and overpriced food, populated by chancers and frequented by pickpockets and morons. I suspect this may not be the thread for me though.
