Yes - well I only had cards left up as I took the tree down before New Year. It had only been up a week too, but it was looking a bit sorry for itself... Ds kept taking the decorations off and the bottom set of lights gave up on me so I thought time to go! In the past I have always kept the tree up until 6th January, but I have to say it felt nice starting the new year with a less cluttered living room.

Tommorow here too.

A lady my mum works with is gonna have earache off me if my luck doesn't improve as I only kept it up until now as she insisted it would improve my luck .

You've blown it, nutcracker. Well, almost. Tonight is twelfth night.

Yes, it facking is, mummeee, janitor and any others!!!

Your decs have to be down by midnight to avoid bad luck. If you believe that guff.

I think you'll have a lucky year anyway.

WeWishUAMerryXmasNANappyNewYr · 05/01/2007 22:59

is it me or can you spell it both of those ways i can't decide which is right ...

WeWishUAMerryXmasNANappyNewYr · 05/01/2007 23:08

yes i do agree with you DG. i remember asking this question at school when i was younger. i got told that in the olden days the day ended and the new one began at sunset, not midnight cos they had no concept of keeping to time other than the sun. so twelfth day (jan 6th) started at sunset the day before (jan 5th) - and was called twelfth night. back then december 25th started on the eve of the 24th (christmas eve.) make sense now? i will see if i can find a link on this ..

Spidermama · 05/01/2007 23:11

I removed all traces of christmas today while the kids were at school. I had a big fire in the sitting room and in it all went. DH took the tree to the collection place. It's a good feeling.

i just found \link{http://www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/customs/Xmas/twelfth.htm/this} and have realised that as back in the old days the night preceded the day, instead of the night being after the day like it is now, i actually have until sunrise to change my name...so i will change it just before i log off whenever that may be! so ner na ner na ner ner biglips!!

basically to summarise DAYS OF XMAS

  1. 26th dec
  2. 27th dec
  3. 28th dec
4...... 12. 6th jan

NIGHT OF XMAS

  1. 25th dec
  2. 26th dec
  3. 27th dec
4........ 12. 5th jan

see the maths all adds up! i LOVE being right!!

WeWishUAMerryXmasNANappyNewYr · 05/01/2007 23:22

but apparently lacks the knowledge of how to do links ... well we can't be good at everything can we!

here

I still hold fast that the 25th December is the first day of Christmas and therefor 5th January is 12th Night. Sorry folks, it will take more than a few people saying I am wrong to change my mind. Anyway, as a good Catholic, I know that the 6th Jan (Epiphany) is a separate festival.
