My DS1 is 9 and had doubts this year from things his friends at school were saying. I think this was his last year believing.

Miaou · 01/01/2007 21:21

Depends on the child. Dd1 is 9 and still believes, but there are some very clued-up five year olds out there who ask some searching questions!

paulaplumpbottom · 01/01/2007 21:29

I think it only takes one child in a class to start comparing notes with eachother.

Blossomhill · 01/01/2007 21:30

My ds who is 9 said that he thinks father christmas is going the same was as the tooth fairy

My DS is 9 and I really think that he knows. He was asking us this year if we believe in Santa, so I think that he has doubts.

KathH · 01/01/2007 21:48

ds is 7 & asked me if there was such a person as santa why is toys r us open till 10!

kid · 01/01/2007 21:51

DD is almost 8 and still believes. DS is 4 and asks lots of questions, he is still convinced at the moment but I'm sure it won't last long.
I think when DC tell me he doesn't exist, I will let them know that he won't be coming to our house anymore then. I won't have to admit I have been lying for years!

blueshoes · 01/01/2007 22:10

My dd 3.3 was afraid of Father Christmas until she saw him at her nursery. She told me she was not scared to go up to him to collect her present because he was Donna, the name of her carer (in costume). So that is her bubble burst already.

mumeeee · 02/01/2007 13:39

Depends on the child. DD1 was nearly 8. DD2 10 and DD3 11.
They are now 19, 17 and 14 and still hang their stocking ( Christmas bags) up.
They all love pretending.
I did ask them this year if they wanted more spent on their main present. But they said no, they still wanted stockings. DH and I also have stockings.

dd was 7.. when I tried to tell her about lapland ect and who lse brings the presents I got...("mam dont lie to me you tell me not to tell loies" Wgen I asked her why she thinks he isnt real, she said "A sleigh in the sky is dangerous it could crash with the airplanes. ANyway mam I have seen the barcodes on the presents and the wrapping paper in the shops" What was I supposed to say, I ignored her and changed the subject for that year but the next year I really had to come clean....
She was ready...

hunkermunker · 02/01/2007 16:02

As soon as they can read if they see this thread title...!

auntyquated · 02/01/2007 16:04

exactly HM ...not a good choice of title!!!!!!

SherlockLGJ · 02/01/2007 16:06

What a wonderful thread title, thanks for that. My DS has only just cracked reading, he reads everthing, food packets, specials boards in restaurants, road signs oh and did I mention MN ????

poptot · 02/01/2007 16:13

Would you really be allowing your dcs to read MN at all ? Just wondered as if you are and then are cross about thread titles I'd be slightly more anxious about the ones with orgasm and sex in the title TBH.
back to original ? my dd still believes at 7 but is very astute and have to dodge questions re similar wrapping paaper etc. Hope I can keep them both going as long as possible.

SherlockLGJ · 02/01/2007 16:16

He reads over my shoulder sometimes, I generally find that he picks out the words he knows...............like um.............bike or Happy Feet or let me think..............Santa.

hunkermunker · 02/01/2007 16:18

I think that this thread title is misguided and the thread should be allowed to drop off active convos.

Blu · 02/01/2007 16:22

When they are old enough to read 'hard' words, like 'believe'?

poptot · 02/01/2007 16:23

Thud.........I am truly amazed you are worried about this thread title and children reading over your shoulder when sex is at the top of active conversations

Mercy · 02/01/2007 16:35

I have to agree with you poptot. dd is 5.9 and at times I have to turn off MN if she wanders into the room.

Anyway, I don't think she totally believes in FC - but she certainly still believes in the Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny.

WigWamBam · 02/01/2007 16:36

Five year olds don't understant words like sex.

They understand words like don't, believe, in, and Santa though.

Of course, they could always wait until they get into year 5 at our Junior school, where a teacher has recently made the headlines for telling 9 year olds that Santa doesn't exist ...

motherinferior · 02/01/2007 16:37

Oh please. There are far worse things out there than having your Santa balloon burst.

DD1 is nearly six and is quite aware that if she thinks about it there's no Santa. She prefers to play around with the idea of belief. It's very interesting.
