Christmas Menu: How Much Can I Do the Day Before?

We are having:

  • goose
  • salad (bag for leaves, ugh, I know. Will wash thoroughly)
  • turnip (+ carrot?) mash
  • roast potatoes
  • shredded fried sprouts
  • a few kinds of sauce for goose

I think that's it. I can do the sauces the day before, right? Is it worth doing up any of the veg the day before?

i reckon you could do the mash and reheat with butter

that's it though.

roast potatoes will be yuck if you do them day before. same for sprouts.

good luck and may the force be with you.

happy christmas NQC!

peel and chop

TheChristmasArmadillo · 22/12/2006 11:07

you can prepare the veg and then leave them in bowls of water in the fridge. That usually saves a bit of time. And prepare the sauces and prepare the goose for cooking.

Then its mostly a case of sticking them on at the right time.

you can do the goose too then carve and reheat in oven. personally I wouldn't but it is ok to do

NotQuiteCockney · 22/12/2006 11:11

I think I'll do peeling and chopping and sauces. I don't mind doing some work on Xmas day, but would like to keep it to a (reasonable) minimum. (Hence the menu being not completely silly)

I peel and chop the night before.Mash is already done & frozen

My chief friend says that you can parboil any veg including roast pot and as long as you cool them rapidly with ice water, you can do them the day before. I have never done it over night but often start my roast pototoes off at the start of the making the meal now, works fine.
I agree that mash you can reheat with some butter or oil, shaping them into potatoe cakes and frying, but case this is too like roasties.
NQV - I am doing red cabbage with my goose, as it goes really well and very easy to make it the day before, as time improves it
