Dodgy Carol singers

2 nights ago we had 3 burly (approx) 17 yr old lads knock on the door, which DH answered, who proceeded to sing 'We wish you a merry Christmas' at him in a very tuneless way, (no Christmas hats etc just looked like they had been hanging about and thought it might generate some cash for them to go caroling). DH listened to a couple of lines before apologising for having no money - which was true, so they finished the song and left.

We live in quite a nice area - but cannot help being suspicious of such behaviour, given some things you hear in the news - and it made us a little uncomfortable. The next morning DH checked all round the car for any damage, there was none. And now when anyone knocks after dark DH always checks who it is from an upstairs window before opening the door. We are probably very unjustified in our behaviour - but I wonder if anyone has had similar experiences and how they felt.

We get quite a bit of that kind of thing - and we don't live in a nice area. Teenage trick or treaters, Penny for the Guy (some teenagers have even turned up without a guy) carol singers.... I tend to laugh straight away and say (hopefully pleasantly but firmly) "aren't you a bit old for this?" and then say sorry, no, and close the door. I wouldn't let them sing a whole verse though. We haven't had any problems yet (famous last words no doubt...) And I don't know if I'd be so relaxed if DH wasn't enormous....

I would probably feel the same as you, checking the car etc etc but tbh they probably were just trying to get a bit of extra cash for a couple of beers or something
