We generally buy for the kids and then hit the sales in January and buy each other something nice.

Lemontart - ooooooh, I'm so with you there. My tax bill is *%$&ing horrendous - I really didn't think it would be so big. eeek!

spinasnowflake · 20/12/2006 10:13

We've put a new floor down in DS1 bedroom,(which we've "borrowed" during our current building work) so not doing pressies this year. All rellies have been asked for b&q vouchers. DH comes from a family where they tend to buy themselves presents and then say "you owe me £XX for my xmas pres". Noone ever buys a pres "off the cuff". Alway asked what they want first (if they havn't already done the above)

IT'S a nightmare. How can you budget in that scenario!!!!!!!!And I'm really trying to be careful as poss this xmas!!

Glitterygookwithchocsonthetree · 20/12/2006 10:16

Oooh, that doesn't sound in the spirit of Christmas does it?! I've bought gifts for people that they have no idea they are getting so it will be lovely to see them chuffed with something I chose because I thought they would really like it (I hope!!!).

spinasnowflake · 20/12/2006 10:51

exactly!!!!

I just don't get it at all.

spinasnowflake · 20/12/2006 10:54

i'm going off the point here-sorry. I just wish we could all try to spent a couple of quid on one another(or bake some cookies or promise a day out etc) but choose something that you hyope the person will like. Not just throw money at one another.

GRRRR. Sorry rant over!!

We never buy Xmas pressies either, except from the kids. We tend to get things when we want them, so no point in splashing out for 'junk' at Xmas.

I usually get dh socks from the kids - sort of tradition now, and he does seem to get holes in them all the time!

corrina28 · 21/12/2006 08:33

we went out yesterday and bought each other a nice pair of slippers from ds' so at least we sort of have something to give each other.

me DH decided we ouldn't do Christmas pressies but would only do stockings (as my insistence). I have a stocking for him but I know he has nothing for me. My birthday is next week too and I know he is not getting me anything for that either. We are pretty skint but surely he could have afforded a £10 pressie? Humbug!

Miaou · 21/12/2006 08:56

Dh and I don't exchange presents and haven't done for a few years (we don't do birthday presents either). Just no need IOO (in our opinion!). If ever we have money we buy each other things but we don't see the point in spending money we haven't got on things we don't need. Really glad to see I'm not the only one - I'm usually on the receiving end of the "odd looks" when I say dh didn't get me anything!

Dottydotthehalls · 21/12/2006 09:02

We did this last year, and I was sooooo miserable, 'cos I'm still a big kid when it comes to presents - so this year, although financially we're in the same position (i.e. broke!), we've given ourselves a £30 limit - which feels very frivolous..! It was going to be £10 but I bartered dp up!

twoplusone · 21/12/2006 11:46

Sometimes dh and I buy for each other other times we dont depends on cash...

IMO as long as the kids have stuff then I am ok....

I know I have nothing from him this year... as he forgot before he went away, so thats no card or pressie for xmas or bday!! the only thing I really want is him to be home.. but he won so i will get my xmas pressie in feb... a BIG HUG ...

saythatagain · 21/12/2006 12:50

We are another couple who don't buy for each other......at the moment! Whilst DD is in full time childcare that srot of thing has gone out of the window. In two years from now though things will be (I hope) different.
I don't feel sad or left out as I would much rather not be in debt.

munz · 21/12/2006 12:56

we don't buy each other things from ourselves as we can't afford it, but our parents give us £30 each fo I spend DH's for him and he spends mine for me so we both still have surprises if that makes sence. until this year we've always brought each other things, but now having J all our money (the little we have! lol) goes on him.
