Father Christmas or Santa Claus?

I have always called "the red man" Father Christmas, and have been calling him that when talking to my 2 dds (4 and 1). However, today we were at a party and everyone kept saying Santa Claus is coming etc, and my two girls didnt have a clue who they were talking about.

I had to try and explain that Father Christmas and Santa Claus were the same man.

Is the trend now to call him Santa Claus or still Father Christmas? I much prefer Father Christmas, but loads seem to use Santa now.

we use Santy 99% of the time (and santa or santa claus now and then)
I'm irish btw

like hoxohoohoh (??) my personal favourite is ds2's FARMER christmas. he has a tractor. so f'ing cute i could eat him. (ds2, not farmer C.)

think ds1 (3yo) copes adequately with the idea that the red man has two names... its not that hard to learn is it? given that they simultaneously absorb language, syntax, the concept of number, concepts of phsics etc etc, without breaking a sweat...

children are a damn sight smarter than us lot.

Santa but also Santy thanks to the irish grandparents and a recent trip to visit the man himself in dublin.

Ta pixiefish, she is apparantly telling teacher tomorrow!

As a child some one once told me an xmas story, where the gist was that 'Santa Claus,'is what you get when 'Saint Nicholas' is said very quickly. I remember my mum melting at this sweet idea (some how tied in with the story). Previously 'Santa' had been an 'Americanism' and banned in our house!

Santy, of course

I hear that in Dublin now he's known as Santo!

nerdgirl · 18/12/2006 21:26

Santa, Santa Claus or Santy here though I have heard 'Santo' in Dublin for the first time this year!

Posey · 19/12/2006 17:20

Father Christmas here too. Had to explain to ds that Santa was another name as he looked totally blank when people ask him what he's asked Santa to bring.

Mirage · 19/12/2006 18:43

We don't call him Santa in this house-he is Father Christmas.However,dd1 calls him Farmer Christmas like hoxohoxohoxos ds.To her it is quite logical as nearly the whole family are farmers. She looks a bit blank at 'SANTA'.

tinkerbellie · 19/12/2006 19:21

thats a funny question never thought of it before i think we do a bit of a mixture but mostly it's just santa
its a bit like nanna and grandma

polecat · 19/12/2006 22:43

LOL Donk, I am also somewhat of a pedant and we also got the whole glazing of eyes when I told DD about Saint Nicholas, Bishop of........ That said, he is "Christmas Father" in our house

kid · 19/12/2006 22:45

When DD was younger, we called him Santa as she found Father Christmas difficult to say. She can say it fine now so its back to Father Christmas. At what age do they stop believing? She is going to be 8 soon so I think this might be her last year.

TALLULAHBELLE · 20/12/2006 16:52

Always been Santa to me. Think Father Christmas is very English. Rarely hear it used North of Border. Sounds rather formal.

Mincepiedermama · 20/12/2006 16:58

Father Christmas.
I always think of Santa as being the American version.

IdrisTheRedNosedDragon · 20/12/2006 16:59

Father Christmas

Gingeme · 20/12/2006 17:08

Farmer Crispies is what ds calls him. Ive always prefered Father Christmas to Snata Claus thats what we always called him as kids.

In our house it's Father christmas. My stepson went his grandparents last year to lapland, at the age of 9. now 10, says he still believes. He told his mum that his friends say they don't believe, so he said he pretend's not to, though says he really does. He also says he doesnt want my son age 4, (his stepbrother) to think he's not real so says he still believes.

melrose · 20/12/2006 17:12

My DS thinks they are 2 different people and will not be convinced otherwise. I always called him Father Christmas but nursery and Cbeebies seem to say Santa, as do a could of Christmas books we have so am sticking to that at the mo
