letters to santa...do they get what they ask for?

Ds is 4 and has asked for a rubbish truck he spotted in tkmax months ago.I haven't been able to get hold of it.Tbh he's got enough stuff ,but he's only asked for this and tell all and sundry that farmer xmas is bringing him this sodding rubbish truck !
Will I be destroying his childlike faith in father xmas ,or teaching him you don't always get what you ask for.
Feeling slightly guilty now and wondering if I should madly rush around looking for this bleedin' truck.
What are your thoughts, what would you do?

If its the only thing he has asked for i would probably try and get it.
Or hopefully he will have lots of other presents and not realise the truck isn't one of them!

Ive had to search for a yellow tractor for DD2 because she asked santa to get her one!

trice · 17/12/2006 09:34

I would try to get hold of the truck. Have you tried ebay? My ds has a similar sort of one track mind and was really dissapointed with his massive haul of presents for his birthday because he wanted a picachou in a pokeball (99p from ebay).

IlanaK · 17/12/2006 09:36

My older son is 5 and when we wrote letters to Santa this year and visited grottos, we talked a lot about the fact that Santa always brings you something special, but that you never know what it will be. When you write him a letter to tell him what you would like, it is just to give him ideas about the kind of toys you like best. He will then have to see what the elves make and bring something he thinks you will like.

There is no way I want to be in a situtation where he thinks he will get exactly what he asks Santa for as I often shop in sales earlier in the year, or on ebay, etc. PLus, what if he asks for something really big and expensive?

BudaBauble · 17/12/2006 09:48

I have told DS (5) that Santa tries to bring everything he wants but that sometimes the elves can't make something (he wants a double light sabre this year!) or that they can't make enough for everyone. But Santa will always try very hard to bring you something special that he thinks you would like.

(Took DS to see Santa in Selfridges and he asked for a double light sabre and Santa said he wasn't sure that the elves could make the double ones!).

See my DS has found Santa present thread for my current problem!

thanks for the replies,I think I'll have a chat with him ,He has three things on his list to santa and I have none of them ...
The other two are little cars from the movie cars and I can't find the bloody things.
will have to do the serious chat soon

Yep they get what they ask for.

If it's been something a bit more expensive (I am a bit tight) then grandparents/great aunty have clubbed together for it - like a bike - so they don't always get if from Santa.

They don't ask for that much so they get it, even if I think it's rubbish.

MerryMellowmas · 17/12/2006 10:41

My son has almost everything on his list.

He wanted a Hot Wheels set though and from experience they are lots of work to put together and generally get broken very easily, so he is not getting it.

He has things he doesn't have on his list so I am hoping he will forget about it.

spinasnowflake · 17/12/2006 10:57

Evil mum that i am I try to discourage my three yr old (while I can!) from actaully having a list. His "what Santa is bringing him" changes every week so DH and I have tried to ham up the "Santa will bring you something you'll like". I'm in very late pg so DS has being watching a lot more TV and DVDs recently and has started to notice Toy Adverts so my little scam is begining to wear a little thin.

We're trying to wow him with what he got so hopefully he won't notive the lack of Thomas the tank engine COMPLETE railway or the spiderman costume or the various trucks/star wars bits or......etc. etc .etc

On the bright side at least he has given you an idea of what he wants. I remember being totally distraught when little becuase SC hadn't brought the thing I'd SECRETLY being pining for all year.

brimfull · 17/12/2006 16:23

thanks for the replies, just got back from tkamx and found the rubbish truck!!!
Still on the lookout for little car .

I do agree about the list thing being a bad idea,it was my mil who encouraged it

I get them to make a list and then we post it - cut off for changing their minds I tell them they won't get everything on the list only some of it. They are fine with this at the moment - 6 yo and 4 yo. I try to get them what they want most but ds asks for some crap and so much I couldn't afford it.

cheeryface · 17/12/2006 18:41

i was sorry i got mine to do a letter to santa this year. they asked for bloody dareways (massive electric things that you whizz around on) and a psp each.
i have got some of the books that they listed etc and compromised and bought nintendo ds which i thought was more suitable.
so, they are getting some of the things they asked for but not all.

if they had asked for only one thing though and been going on about it i would defo get it.

snowydelight · 17/12/2006 20:21

I'm glad you found the rubbish truck! DS2 (8) wrote a letter to Santa heavily prompted by me so he'll get what he asked for. It never occured to me to ask DD (3) as I didn't think she'd have a definite opinion - silly me! She came running up to me the other day saying "can Santa bring me a scooter " and hasn't stopped talking about it since. I found a lovely scooter for £20 and she can have what I originally bought her from Santa for her birthday in Feburary. Of course you can't always get what you want, but if it's not ridiculous and it's within your power I do think the whole santa thing lasts such a short time it's worth trying to make it as magical as possible.

morningpaper · 17/12/2006 20:22

NO

The ONLY Thing she asked for was a Chocolate Coin Maker and it has had such DREADFUL reviews that I feel I can't buy it

Am I horrible or sensible?

brimfull · 17/12/2006 20:25

morningpaper,I know what you mean ,my dd asked for a cadbury's choc machine yrs ago .It was utter crap but she was really chuffed with it.
I reckon if it's fairly cheap ,pander to them and get it,esp if it's all she's asked for.

Go on go on go on go on

OP posts:
morningpaper · 17/12/2006 20:29

It's 15 quid and apparently there are 36 stages to making a chocolate coin and you can only make 2 at a time

I think she will be wildly disappointed with it

crunchie · 17/12/2006 20:29

Mine decided to do their lists tonight, a bit blooming late as I have already bought every5thing. So there I was suggesting things (that I have already got) but no none of that went on the list!! However I do tell them ghe only does their stockings so it is a total waste of time doing a list anyway Cruel aren't I !!

JollyOldSaintNikkielas · 17/12/2006 20:34

Dd1 didn't ask for any toys until about a week ago , cue me searching the internet for a brain drain but her other request won't be happening -Pixel Chick £20 is too much to spend on an extra present!
She has most of the books she asked for though.
Dd2 has asked for everything on Tv so have bought her whatI think she'll play with, More Dr who figures and some scooby doo stuff

brimfull · 17/12/2006 20:42

ah well morningpaper,I wouldn't bother, just get the coins and tell her santa got a bit mixed up and got his elves to make them for her

OP posts:
Chamomulledwine · 17/12/2006 20:47

I try and talk through their list as they do it so the final product is reasonable. Once it has actually disappeared up the chimney I do my best to get everything they ask for. Unfortunately, I was a bit lax with the editing this year and DS2 has ended up with 2 different hot wheel tracks on his list. Not sure what to do about that as I bought one and he keeps talking about the other one as well.
