Marble fireplace - how to attach the stockings???

This is our first Christmas with a marble fireplace we are used to having wooden surrounds so could pop a small nail in the top, how on earth do I hang a stocking from marble?

Any suggestions would be welcome. They would have to take a little bit of weight ie a bit of chocolate.

Help please

A large plastic peg thing?

Those building things that look like giant nipple clamps?

DingDongDraculaOnHigh · 14/12/2006 20:20

or something like this

DingDongDraculaOnHigh · 14/12/2006 20:20

i must say we hang our empty but leave on floor when full

JonesTheSteam · 14/12/2006 20:21

We used sticky-backed hooks on our fireplace.

They were quite tricky to remove if you don't want them up all year, but not impossible.

fatwoman · 14/12/2006 20:21

well we've had marble for 5 years now and every year it drives me nuts! when the stockings are empty I can actually sort of wedge them into the crack between the iron bit and the marble - but not safe when the fire's lit and no good for when they're full. The best I've managed is a huge wodge of blu-tac on a corner bit - basically a blutac hook. still deeply unsatisfactory - and still doesn;t work when full. i'll watch this thread with interest

ludaloo · 14/12/2006 20:23

have you tried those hooks with a sucker on the back (usually for window I'm guessing) they might stick to marble??

BethAndHerBrood · 14/12/2006 20:23

We have little ornament things with a hook that hangs over the front edge. They are quite heavy so they take the weight of a filled stocking.

bctmum · 14/12/2006 20:23

put them under the xmas tree!

foxtrottothefestivegrotto · 14/12/2006 20:23

Cut a piece of wood to fit on the mantelshelf, paint it to match, them clamp it on (with those giant nipple clamp things LOLOLOL). Cover the edges and clamps with greenery or tinsel. Add nails or hooks into the wood. Sure its on martha stwart, i'll try and find a link.

fatwoman · 14/12/2006 20:24

all of these ideas are good - I esp ike the sucker hooks idea - but things to hang stockings up have to be fashioned out of whatever's lying around the house. at about 9 pm Christmas Eve. tis in the rules

JackieNoHoHo · 14/12/2006 20:24

You can buy weighted Stocking hangers that sit on the mantlepiece with a hook hanging over to hang the stocking from, but I can't find any very tasteful (or cheap) ones. Sure I've seen some silver coloured metal ones somewhere...

NannyL · 14/12/2006 20:24

what about one of those 'suction hook' things?

not sure their real name but they are a hook on a sucker.. and you sort of puch the hook bit down which 'suckers' the air out of the sucker so its stuck

does anyone know what i mean...

u may use them in the kitchen for tea towels... at least my grandmotehr does!

JackieNoHoHo · 14/12/2006 20:25

(as BethandHerBrood says)

JackieNoHoHo · 14/12/2006 20:29

Aha - this is what I'm thinking of, but it's very expensive.

fatwoman · 14/12/2006 20:32

a bit Caroline wotsername methinks

BethAndHerBrood · 14/12/2006 20:33

OMG!! £29!!! Mine are not like that!!!!!

I needed to get another one this year for DS2, £5.99 in a garden centre. It's lovely, really traditional looking, kind of matches the other two, and is very heavy. What more do you need?

BethAndHerBrood · 14/12/2006 20:35

Who's Caroline wotsername?

fatwoman · 14/12/2006 20:43

here

JackieNoHoHo · 14/12/2006 20:45

£5.99 sounds a bit more like it, bethandherbrood.

hatwoman · 16/12/2006 20:38

inspired by this thread I bought a pack of rubber sucker type hooks. I am pleased to say they work perfectly. I've wrapped a small piece of red fur round them which covers the plastic perfectly. Thank you hotpot for starting the thread, or I wouldn't have thought about it. (I doubt they'll carry the weight when full, but let's face it they don;t stay full for long do they?)

Whizzz · 16/12/2006 20:54

Lakeland did some great plastic hooks that really stay up - but just checked thier site & they don;t seem to be on this year. They were in a pack of 3 (not much help really !!)

hatwoman · 16/12/2006 21:06

one of the stockings waited until I pressed "post" and then dropped to the floor. oh the dilemmas of the middle class
