We used to put out pillow cases for him when I was a kid. I thought it worked well. DH insists on stockings because he says pillow cases aren't Christmassy. It never bothered me. Anyway, I don't like the tacky felt things which fall apart. They're not real stockings anyway so what difference does it make?

What do you use? Please don't suggest I start cross stitching my own stockings because it's not going to happen.

Little things in stockings hung by the fire and the rest under the tree.

scotlou · 15/12/2006 15:33

Small things in stockings (large slightly shapeless things kniteed by an elderly neighbour - they're knitted quite loosely so are nice and stretchy. I remember she was very chuffed when I asked her to do it -and deliberately didn't shape the heel so more stuff would fit in! THe big stuff goes in their own piles on the floor.

LittleSarah · 15/12/2006 15:42

Oh I love stockings! We made our own - so easy - out of nice red tartan years ago. I also have a lovely knitted one for dd. There were some really cool red and white stripey knitted stockings talked about on here a while ago.

Stockings will hang on mantlepiece and then laid filled up on/below mantlepiece in the morning. Main presents in a pile near the tree.

KentuckyFreudChicken · 15/12/2006 15:52

We have huge stockings which are hung on the fireplace which I made years ago.....all pressies go in there except main pressie which goes under the tree.

Only pressies in the stockings are from santa
Tree pressies are from us, friends etc

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 15/12/2006 16:16

homemade red sacks by the fireplace in the morning. Tree presents are from people.

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 15/12/2006 16:17

Buy plain red pillowcases, Spidermama! Or white ones. Then get your children to decorate their own.

helenhismadwife · 15/12/2006 20:43

we have both, stockings of little bits on the bedroom door and pillowcases of pressies in the sitting room

Well we had stockings on the door for said stocking fillers. All the main presents were from family, not Father Christmas. Intend to do this with DS when he's old enough too.

WeWishUAMerryXmasNANappyNewYr · 17/12/2006 23:52

presents under the tree in piles for each person - from family/friends.

small stocking filler type presents in a pillow case laid out by the fire and one big present - from santa.

fussymummy · 18/12/2006 00:41

Have 3 children and they each have a stocking on their beds for santa to fill!!!

Also a couple of extra pressies get laid on the bed.

When they come downstairs they get presents from me and partner.

They don't get their main presents until after dinner.

They also get pressies from family and friends during the day.

CouldEquallyHaveBeenAnAardvark · 18/12/2006 00:44

Stockings on the end of beds.

Pillowcases are "grabby" IMO.

FrostyTheSnowMarsLady · 18/12/2006 00:47

Stockings! (and I'm not talking fishnet)

WeWishUAMerryXmasNANappyNewYr · 18/12/2006 02:21

grabby? do you mean greedy? we only have pillow cases cos i don't want to put nails in the fireplace to hang up stockings and when i was little we had the same as we shared a bedroom and you couldn't fit three on the door handle.

CouldEquallyHaveBeenAnAardvark · 18/12/2006 02:37

Yep.

But only because it is from memories of childhood when girls I went to school with had enormous pillowcases full of v expensive things - no aspersion on anyone on this thread and their festive traditions!

QuootiepiesChristmasName · 18/12/2006 02:39

Stocking. Mum gave me my stocking from forever the other day - a red one with a reindeer. DS will have his own. My sister bought a babies first christmas one, but ill find him a nice big one. Its what ive always know.

Tortington · 18/12/2006 02:40

under the tree. we dont 'do' stockings - very 1950's

2000milestoeidsvold · 18/12/2006 02:44

we had santa sacks as kids - and all our presents went in there

now - dds, dh and I have a stocking - small bits and pieces in.

rest of presents - wrapped depending on how big they are

alibauble · 18/12/2006 02:59

We used to have pillow cases when little, but then my Granny bought me one with my name on. Two years ago I bought some beautiful sacks for my boys in Marks and Spencer in the sale. The fun is what's in it, not what it's in mind you. Little fun things in the stocking, big pressies are always under the tree.

Tortington · 18/12/2006 03:02

when i was a kid my great, great, great granny selwyn crocheted a 'coal pocket'

we couldnt afford real presents but we were grateful for the coal so we coul have a warm fire.

the 'coal pockets' were made out of liquorice and we ate them too - when we didn't have to throw them on the fire to keep up warm that is.

QuootiepiesChristmasName · 18/12/2006 03:07

that cant be true

Tortington · 18/12/2006 03:09

nah is it fuck.

QuootiepiesChristmasName · 18/12/2006 03:10

really? liquarice (you know what i mean) burn on a fire?
