Traditional dictates that they get a dvd in their stocking. Ds would like the Minion movie but struggling for the girls. They are 10 and 8, don't particularly want to go over a PG but might consider a 12A depending on why a 12 iykwim. Ds (6) will probably will end up seeing it.

Things that they like-
Real actors rather than animation,
Action/ adventure - Harry Potter, Narnia, weren't as keen on Percy Jackson.
Comedy - love Mr Bean, Home Alone.
Dd1 has recently discovered her tragic side so something thought provoking might go down well but no animals dying.
Doesn't have to be newly released, wondered about The Truman show, they do watch quite a few old films on TV. Any suggestions?

Dd (9) is getting Annie.

Night at the museum
Golden compass

Sorry Shoulwe I see you have already made your decision.

IMHO not sure about Truman show as it is unsettling and there are some scenes with distress in (when he is in the sea).

What about Groundhog Day?

I know you said not animated, but Inside Out is a really lovely film, if you haven't seen it yet.

doistayordoigo · 12/12/2015 20:27

Again, I know you said not animated, but Up is good and Planet 51 appeals to everyone in our house. Or what about the Pirates of the Caribbean Or The Mummy films?

Unfortunately ds is the only one who likes Paddington here! We do have it. They enjoy NATM but have both (we don't buy loads of DVDs but they usually get a couple at Christmas and one at Easter).

Ds is getting Minions and Inside Out, again the animation really put the girls off. Dd2 has always disliked it and I think dd1 thinks it is babyish. They are happy with slightly dated effects though!

We should revisit Pirates of the Caribbean, was too scary for them last time, quite a few years ago.

I'm not too worried about the scary bits in the Truman show. It all turns out ok, they are nearly 9 and 11 and like a bit of tragedy. Every story they write seems to get rid of parents fairly quickly maybe I should be worried! They recently read Bad Magic and were facinated by the idea that they might be unsuspecting actors in someone else's play. They like philosophy and deep thinking, it is something all three of their teachers comment on. Old heads on young shoulders!

I agree that I might not have given it to dd when she was 6, but unfortunately that is the dilemma with different ages, I can't keep her young until he catches up. He is not adverse to a little tragedy himself - he enjoyed reading the Hobbit and the early Lemony Snickets (dd2 is a fan). Having older sisters makes him a little more grown up for his age. Still not quite willing to venture into the 12+ ratings though.

My 8 year old dd loves The Parent Trap (both of them), The Addams Family, Beethoven films, The Secret Garden, The Scooby Doo films, PollyAnna, Enchanted, Matilda, Annie, Honey I shrunk the kids and The Goonies !!

Glassofwineneeded · 13/12/2015 22:46

My favourite movie for watching with my boys is Free Willy. God I love that cheesy film.

clippityclop · 13/12/2015 22:51

Cheaper by the Dozen, Fly Away Home, Jumanji (sp?) How about traditional musicals like Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang if you haven't already got them?

Chillywhippet · 13/12/2015 23:22

Good ponts about Truman show. ot does work out in the end and it is like all the stories with no parents.

There are 9 years between oldest and youngest in my house. The youngest saw all sorts of stuff a bit early, Lord of the Rings etc but was ok with it.

The only thing I put my foot down about was Game of Thrones box set on Boxing Day last year - um, no way
