Tree decorating tips?

Hi all.

Wondering if anyone can help me decorate my tree so that it is beautiful and elegant. Growing up our tree was always, umm, "special" as us kids decorated it with homemade ornaments and lots of colour. I see others' trees looking so nice and wonder how they do it.

We have a real tree, 7ft, with gold as the main colour and some red accents. But the end result is still not right. I know I need more lights, esp at the bottom- am getting them today.

Thanks for any help you have wonderful mumsnetters!

Gorgeous trees.

This is the first year that all our baubles are "special" rather than infills that we bought in a pack.

We go out and buy a bauble each every year, and I buy the Swarovski annual star / snowflake trio every year.

Swarovski at the top (with extra protection), the rest is evenly spread, we have a lovely time all putting our own baubles on.

I like to keep the same colours but have lots of different ornaments that draw the eye.

Here's mine from last year - no theme, lots of special ornaments. But I do have masses of plain baubles and might choose a colour scheme, thus ones was red, purple and green.

This year I am adding tinsel Shock
It's gorgeous Finnish tinsel though - narrow irridescent stuff and shiny green stuff that looks like mistletoe.

I love the tree skirt chippy!

DickDewy you're so right about having to be a bit ruthless if you want your tree to look a certain way. Over the years, we've been given so many ornaments for various occasions which is lovely but doesn't always work! Might have to think about two trees for future, one to look nice and one for sentimental value stuff!

We have a 6ft tree with multicoloured lights and a mix of baubles. Around half glass some vintage, half plastic. We also got a tree skirt which seems to finish the tree off.

Lights up and down not round and round- mind blown.

Here's mine from last year. This year will be same lights, same decorations but will pick up our real tree next Sunday. I always want an 8ft+ and DP manages to persuade me into 6ft after pointing out it will be hitting the ceiling Grin Some beautiful trees, loving the up and down rather than round and round tip.
