...then find your kids fixate on what are really quite shit things?

DD (12) said the other day, ooh, do you remember last year, where we watched Nativity [for the 93rd time] and ate sainsbos cheese balls?

thought input: minimal
cost input: minimal

that was the year we bought her a FUCKING HARP

the FUCKING HARP CAME HOME FROM THE WEST END IN A TAXI

I HAVEN'T BEEN IN A TAXI SINCE 2003

we even HID the FUCKING HARP

(tho how we HID the FH is beyond me)

I just love the title of this thread Grin

happsymum · 29/11/2015 02:43

Haha loving this thread.
Not Christmassy but a trip to Barcelona in the summers two favourite moments were

  1. Watching pidgeons bathing in a fountain
  1. The chicken for lunch
  2. Running in the rain for ages because no taxis were empty, and then the station being flooded.
😑 10yr old! ( my DP nodding along in total agreement ...)
AlfieandAnnieRose · 29/11/2015 04:31

Pmsl at the pigeon and fake fc's beard in Lapland!

toastyarmadillo · 29/11/2015 04:46

My dc are just as bad, recent trips that disappointed them were a trip to an aquarium where they got hands on with fish was a let down due to a lack of giraffes. Another trip to a zoo proved disapointing due to a lack of chickens. The most popular trip to date was lego land, where there was torrential rain and we all sat for two hours in the food tent, being dripped on, eating junk food, before giving up and going home early. They still go on about how great that lego land trip was, watching rain come through the tarpaulin style roof and dunking chocolate bars in hot chocolate to keep warm!

Very funny thread. DD said to me recently, "Are they going to switch on the Christmas tree lights again in the town like they did last year, when we (the kids) sang carols". I'd forgotten myself but thought it was nice that she remembered. Then she said, "'cos they had lovely hot chocolate at it".

Taytocrisps · 29/11/2015 10:07

"When they went back to school in September, ds1 (just going into Year 1) had to write a couple of sentences about the best thing he had done in the Summer.

His was: 'I watched my Spiderman DVD and ate crisps in bed with Dad'. "

That's hilarious SummerNights Grin

Love this thread. Thanks, Muddha!

MuddhaOfSuburbia · 29/11/2015 17:11

I love it too Barbara

I especially love how so many of these magical experiences involve potato products Grin

I just took DS to Bath Christmas Market. He had a huge smile on his face and said "I love it here. There are so many pigeons."

When dd1 was 3 we went to Disney in Florida whilst staying in Tampa with my uncle. We had a fab morning meeting characters, seeing loads and watching shows.
In the afternoon it absolutely chucked it down and everything closed due to lightning. The staff tried to shepherd us into the restaurants but we decided to brave it. I was too stingy to buy a 7 dollar poncho for her so fashioned one out of a plastic bag and we ran through knee high floods and splashed in overflowing rivers.
That bit is still the highlight of her trip. She talks fondly of her plastic bag poncho and on rainy days often demands a new version.

lurkingabit · 30/11/2015 10:48

Yes, apparently the best thing about Xmas last year in our house was the day we had our tea in front of the telly.

Never mind the iPad pressie. Or anything else.

lurkingabit · 30/11/2015 10:51

oooh and the tea consisted of very nice bits, very very nice bits with fancy crackers and stuff. But according to DD, because it wasn't a plated meal iykwim, her written description was 'and we ate any old thing in front of the telly'

R0nJ0n · 30/11/2015 10:57

I can add to the potato products. DD's favorite thing about our summer holiday in Portugal was discovering she liked chips dipped in fried egg yoke.

laplumeofmyaunt · 30/11/2015 11:09

'Making memories' is one of DH and I's Hmm phrases - DSIL uses it a lot. This thread thread proves what a lot of bollocks it is Grin. Also shows that you really shouldn't worry about junior school kids feeling left out if they don't get piles of the latest craze stuff for presents - they won't remember what they got by the time they get back to school and compare presents - not that I think they actually do this anyway........

This is so funny! Just goes to show they remember what they want. Tempted to link all the making memories serial offenders on facebook to this thread.

biscuitsfordinner · 30/11/2015 12:10

I have stopped doing a "nice" advent calendar as they all just fight over the days with sweets in. This year they each have a cadburys one.

We went to Thailand this year and my 5 yr old ds' bit was the plane journey home where he had a 9 hour TV marathon. So much for cultural enrichment!

liinyo · 30/11/2015 12:20

When my daughter was nearly five her dad took her up to London to see the floral tributes to Princess Diana at Kensington Palace. We thought it was a once in a lifetime sight that she would remember forever. I asked he r the next day what it had been like and in a tone of total awe she said ' oh Mummy, I had a WHOLE Mars bar all to myself!'

TequilaMockingburd · 30/11/2015 13:11

My DD is 5. Last year I made a Christmas Eve box with new PJ's, slippers, a stocking, chocolates and the wonderful Twas The Night Before Christmas. In my head ......ahhhh such a lovely scene, reading the book together. All cosy and ready for Santa. Cue DD showing total disinterest and delivering an abridged version( complete with faux American accent) in 30 secs..something like this, " goes in his sleigh, the moon shines, tramples about a few roofs, drops off the gifts and that's it, the end"

This year, I shall be drinking Baileys!

SJL2311 · 30/11/2015 13:48

....that is so funny !

AnonymousBird · 30/11/2015 13:55

DS (11) has asked for a Roast in the Bag chicken from Aldi for Christmas dinner as it is his absolute favourite

Praise be, if they could make them a bit bigger, I will be cancelling my heinously expensive meat order!

JacobFryesTopHatLackey · 30/11/2015 13:58

Oh I did the advent calendar thing last year. Beautiful little wooden ornaments that went on the tree. Did they think it was magical? Did they bollocks! Not as good as the chocolate one bought by granny.

This year they're getting minions chocolate ones from B&M.

glentherednosedbattleostrich · 30/11/2015 14:00

The weeks of searching for the fucking singing fucking Elsa doll. The 3 hour round trip to go buy the fucking thing, because it was the only thing on her list that she desperately wanted. And Santa had to bring it or Christmas would be RUINED.

When asked on Boxing Day what her best present was by my Dad, she said a rubber snake. From fucking Poundland. In fairness, her love for the creepy rubber bastard has far outlived the fucking Elsa doll but still, it was a last minute, won't that be funny thing for her stocking.

Bloody kids.

Thanks, I really needed that rant Xmas Grin

countrybump · 30/11/2015 14:14

We had a lovely holiday once - spent money on visiting attractions, nice days out etc. All my DS remembers from that holiday (and reminds me about constantly) was that I locked the keys in the car of the boot and he had to go for a ride in an AA van with Daddy and the dog.

That was 6 years ago, and he still tells that story every time we see an AA van.

angemorange · 30/11/2015 14:25

Love the pigeon story!

Bought my DS a cuddly lion that talked in the market one year (£5) - it still sits on his bed four years later and all the expensive stuff from that year is long gone.....
