rather laptop bound as dd a bit ill so not moved much from the sofa but started playing christmas music as there are some pieces that I really love (but dont dare play before late November!)

I'm currently listening to "Carol of the Bells" (of Home Alone fame!)

Anyone else got any favourites?

My favourite carol is O Holy Night and my favourite Christmas song is the one by Shakin' Stevens or the Original Band Aid one.

millefeuille1 · 22/11/2015 17:54

I love "Hark! the Herald Angels", "Once in Royal David's City" and "Oh Little Town of Bethlehem". Have these on in the car throughout December. For "pop" I like Shakin 'Stevens, The Pogues and Mike Oldfield's "In Dulce Jubilo" (although a bit of Wizzard never goes amiss).

Carol- In the Bleak Midwinter

Song- A Spaceman Came Travelling by Chris de Burgh

Panadbois · 22/11/2015 18:07

Christmas lullaby by John Rutter

Teilwng yw'r Oen, a Welsh version of Handel's Messiah

"Once in Royal David's City". Reminds me of primary school assemblies/childhood Christmases.

"Fairytale of New York". Reminds me of an amazing teenage Christmas.

"Pipes of Peace". Love the message.

"Mary's Boy Child". Great fun!

White Christmas sung by Otis Redding - so soulful, I love it

lizzywig · 22/11/2015 19:11

Have yourself a merry llittle Christmas :-)

ChristmasZombie · 22/11/2015 20:01

Once in Royal David's City and Oh Little Town of Bethlehem are my favourite carols. I also love the jubilant Christmas morning carols Ding Dong Merrily on High and Joy to the World. I love the fact that they are so hearty, and really need to be belted out!

Song-wise, it's Fairytale of New York, Mary's Boy Child (Bony M), and Slade.
Stay Another Day by East 17 and Two Become One by Spice Girls both have special places in my heart. Not exactly Christmas songs, but both were Christmas number one (back when the charts actually mattered!) and have wintery videos!

Whatsername24 · 22/11/2015 20:47

Fairytale Of New York, without a doubt. I'll listen to it at any time of the year. Really like the Greg Lake one too - I Believe In Father Christmas? Think that's what it's called.

Carols I like are In The Bleak Midwinter, Little Donkey, Silent Night and I used to get really emotional at school Christmas services when the little ones sang Away In A Manger.

annandale · 22/11/2015 20:56

Fantasia on Christmas Carols by Vaughan Williams.

Don't like many of the Christmas songs and can't believe most of them are still played but wrapping presents to The Ronettes' Sleigh Ride is OK. And have been known to feel an inner glow ice skating to Last Christmas

O little town
Quem pastores
In dulci jubilo
Ding dong with everyone doing lots of silly ding dongs and descants
Coventry carol
Three kings from Persian lands afar
Perhaps not a carol but often sung then Jesus Christ the apple tree
Oh men from the fields, irish
The Huron carol, love it
From out of a wood did a cuckoo fly
Once in royal
Again not nec Christmassy, but Tchaikovsky when Jesus Christ..
The chorus of angels from the realms, you can leave the rest.
The linden tree
Silent night, unaccompanied. In German pref.

Detest away in a manger. Have a breathy voice and was always made to sing first verse solo as it sounded like a six year old. Loathsome. But sorry about dc2. Far worse.

nagynolonger · 22/11/2015 22:28

Rutter's Candlelight Carol is beautiful.

O little Town of Bethlehem was my mum's favourite and I remember her singing that when we were children. Makes me sad to hear it though. I feel like an idiot when it makes me cry in the carol service.

Adeste Fideles (love it sung in latin0, and O holy night are my favourites.

12 days of Christmas is fun, and great when sung by a hall full of primary age children.

toddlerwrangling · 24/11/2015 00:35

Oooh, I love a good carol :)

I have a real soft spot for one we used to sing at primary school: "Lift up lightly the stable bar". Never encountered it since!
Coventry Carol
Sussex Carol
It Came Upon A Midnight Clear
the Tyrolean Cradle Song
Girls and boys, leave your toys
Every star shall sing a carol
Three Kings from Persian Lands Afar
the traditional old English tune for The Holly and the Ivy
Ding Dong Merrily

Christmas music - Gaudete maybe? I used to have loads of favourite Christmas pop songs but the music channels have rather done for them, even the ones I really liked I've heard too many times now :( :(

laplumeofmyaunt · 24/11/2015 09:22

If you like Carol of the Bells, it may be worth listening to some Gabriele - we have a CD of Gabrieli's brass music which comes out every Christmas, which I love. Very joyful - sounds like it's being played by angels on brass trumpets.

laplumeofmyaunt · 24/11/2015 09:22

Gabrieli, not Gabriele.

DonkeyOaty · 24/11/2015 09:26

A Peter Griffin Christmas - particularly I bought these gifts for you. Excellent. V festive.

jennymac · 24/11/2015 09:33

Otis Redding's version of White Christmas

ToastedOrFresh · 24/11/2015 09:47

Alone on Christmas from Home Alone

Elton John - Step Into Christmas

Paul McCartney - Simply Having a wonderful Christmastime

The Smith and Jones comedy version of 'Rockin' around the Christmas Tree'

Silver Bells by whomsoever. I'd never heard it until we got the compilation cd. It's a firm favourite with e now.

(Sorry, the Chris de Burgh Spaceman song is the most dreary unchristmassy Christmas song apart from one on a compilation cd that is so unrelentingly awful we race each other to get to the cd player to skip to the next track. It's an obscure and frankly creepy song.)

LumelaMme · 24/11/2015 09:53

In the Bleak Midwinter, the first verse, sung in a cold church by a child.
Gets me every time.

CalloftheHaunted · 24/11/2015 10:53

Mine are "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" and "The Angel Gabriel"
