Please help me. I am just stuck - was going to do lamb shanks (see separate recipe post on that) but still don't feel I have the right Christmassy recipe for it.

I have found a recipe for panettone bread and butter putting which I'm thinking of doing.

I want something that can be prepared in advance because we're going to a church service that evening.

Ideas??

I posted a wonderful Christmas recipe you ungrateful wretch............have you been back lately have ya, have ya ???

Wellllllllllllllll

JoshandJamie · 09/12/2006 20:54

Yes I did see it (and was terribly rude for not saying thank you - have spent all evening looking for recipes and christmas pressies) So THANKYOU. And it does sound gorgeous but am still not convinced that it should be lamb shanks. Rest assured if it is the recipe will be yours

I don't know. I guess because we're having turkey on Xmas day, a glazed ham would be good. But we just had a thanksgiving dinner with a massive ham which we're still eating and i can't quite face it again.

Early evening carol service, drive round to look at the lights, home, bacon sanies and hot chocolate all round.

Why oh why oh why are you making Christmas eve like another Christmas day. Just chill do something easy and simple.

JoshandJamie · 09/12/2006 21:21

Flutturkey, that is a damn good question. I think it's because this is the first time we're hosting Christmas - until now we've never lived close enough to family or had enough space or been pregnant or whatever.

And whenever we've gone to my SIL's for Xmas, it always seems like she's put a lot of effort in and I feel almost obliged to do it too. Maybe I'm a closet perfectionist??

dont think of christmas food on christmas eve
christmas food goes on from christmas day till new years day
i'm doing stir fry or curry
chill out dont get stressed

fireflyxmasfairylights2 · 09/12/2006 21:52

My IL's have a tradition of a chinese take away on xmas eve..

If I ate that i'd have no room for dinner on Christmas day!!!!!!!!

corrina28 · 09/12/2006 21:52

spag bol, its quick, easy and minimum washing up!

dmo · 09/12/2006 22:03

chinese sounds good
might change my mind on stir fry or curry

wrappingpaperBOwZZAndribbons · 09/12/2006 22:05

What about a posh sausage and mash, with fancy butcher's sausages, homemade onion gravy, that kind of thing?

trice · 09/12/2006 22:19

We go swedish with smorgasbord and cold apple soup. Lots of spices and no bother to prepare.

Lilymaid · 09/12/2006 22:22

I cook the Christmas ham on Christmas Eve and we eat it hot that evening. After that it is available for cold cuts over the next few days.

SleepInHeavenlyPeace · 09/12/2006 22:36

oooh, trice, I like that idea... what do you incllude in the smorgasboard?

elliepmummy · 10/12/2006 08:54

we are going to see father xmas at leeds castle in the afternoon with our friends (we are godparents to each others children) so think we'll be eating out either at lunch or tea time as theres as theres a restuarant near by anything to wear the kids out (godchildren are 4 and nearly 3 & our dd is 2.3) all this depends on me not having no 2 early if so xmas eve may be in hospital!!!!

ComeOyefaithfulVeneer · 10/12/2006 09:02

We will be down at my parents' house, but will probably have a raclette.

hulababy · 10/12/2006 09:04

We don't do anything special on Christmas Eve foodwise. Will visit both sets of parents during day - having brunch at PILs, early tea at my parents, church nativity at 5:30pm and then will go onto frie's party after this. Later than normal bedtime for DD, after leaving FC his goodies - and hopeflly she'll sleep in a bit in the morning.

sunnysideup · 10/12/2006 09:22

I think everyone would be delighted with stuff that's been suggested here, bacon sarnies, sausage and mash, even beans on toast!

I for one don't like being 'entertained' all the time and a nice relaxing family meal on christmas eve sounds perfect to me.

EASE OFF woman, save the work for christmas day. Closet perfectionist? I think you have come out my dear....

step away from the recipe book....leave the kitchen........

snowydelight · 10/12/2006 12:35

I like to go out for lunch on Christmas Eve - there's enough cooking over the next few days - then just have nibbly, nice stuff in the evening. If you really want a proper meal how about making a fish pie earlier in the day then you can just put it in the oven whenever you want it.

sasa15 · 10/12/2006 12:54

how do you make fish pie?
