You don't have to go to the school Christmas fair. They are usually run by the PTA in order to raise funds for the extras that all our children enjoy. Our school fair - 50p to get in and various stalls selling everything from jumble (kids Eco stall) to handmade christmas decorations, cards, tombola, etc. There was, of course, the cake stall - sold out (as usual). We raised over £1000 - from all the generous parents and children who thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

xmasmummy · 08/12/2006 22:35

ours didnt was free entry, raffles were 50p tombola and lucky dips were 20p and fc was 50p and they had loads of food- tea/coffee were 25p cakes and squash were 10p and hotdogs were 30p

handlemecarefully · 08/12/2006 22:42

I love Christmas fete's / fairs and so do my children....

SherlockLGJ · 08/12/2006 22:43

Any of you disseneters on the PTA ???

bogwobbit · 08/12/2006 22:55

Most school fairs are run by the PTA to raise funds for the school. In our school the funds go towards Christmas parties, trips to panto and to subsidise various other outings throughout the year (plus many other things) etc etc. If it wasn't for this fundraising, these 'extras' would be charged to the parents or just wouldn't happen. Also lots of parents give up their time to help at these fetes, when they would probably much rather be doing something else.
I think the simple answer is, if you don't like it, don't go. No-one's forcing you.

I think I would gladly pay more in some ways, just to make a contribution and not turn up, I know very bah humbug, but I was at my first xmas fair as a mum today, I bought tickets, but also ran around serving the coffee, mince pies, tea, juice and biscuits that were included in the price of the ticket, it was mayhem.

I joined the pta to help out, "do my bit", but it is not a pleasure, sorry this is off topic, I will go and look for the harper valley pta board

Spidermama · 09/12/2006 23:05

50p entry for kids here and £1 for parents. My dd bought a stretchy ball at a stall there today and it was £4.99.

I usually come out of these things feeling fleeced but too guilty to mention anything because it's all in a good cause blah blah blah, whiteboards and trips to the museum blah blah blah.

aliceband · 09/12/2006 23:05

it is bloody expensive.. i agree but as it's for the school, i dont mind. but one pound for all games is appalling, 30 p for stalls makes me happy

dmo · 09/12/2006 23:09

oh dear
its the christmas fate tomo after church better nip to the bank for a loan

cant believe it tomo fr church each child needs a christingle so i have to get up extre early to make the damm thing and mass is at 9.30

how to make a chistingle:

  1. take an orange and make a small hole in the top
  2. place a 4" square of foilarounf the base of a 4" candle and push the candle in the hole of the orange
  3. fashten and tape a red ribbon arounf the orange
  4. load four cocktail sticks with nuts, rasins, soft sweets etc and insert into orange

it is advisable to make the christingle on the day of the service and no longer than 24 hrs before the service
