Wrapping paper angst

I need your wrapping paper recommendations
I am fed up of crappy thin wrapping paper that tears on the corners of boxes as you are wrapping , or is so transparent you need 2 or 3 layers to hide the packaging of the present.
I have tried M&S, Tesco and Woolies - do I really need to fork out £5 a roll for John Lewis stuff?

Get a big roll of plain brown paper from the post office. Have a potato printing frenzy. Ta daaaa - cheap & exclusive wrapping paper

LorinaLovesSprouts · 08/12/2006 14:02

Got all mine in paperchase, £3 for a 3metre roll and its lovely stuff. So much nicer than the cheap stuff

xmasmummy · 08/12/2006 14:26

i buy mine from pound land it does fine

boomie · 08/12/2006 14:30

Bought mine from Asda for the last couple of years - very cheap and very strong!!

maycontainstress · 08/12/2006 14:42

Peacocks. I got a mahoosive roll in there for £2, it is surprisingly thick

Stockingsofdinosaurs · 08/12/2006 15:38

Kids' pictures where poss (ie where they won't see), newspaper from Father Christmas, something from a charity bazaar for anything else. Or use a nice reusable bag instead.

Ikea, very cheap and thick enough for most presents.

I find the JL extra wide rolls are good value, though-I've found the trick is to start wrapping with the biggest present you have, and cut the paper precisely, so you have just enough. Next do the next smallest present, and so on, saving any offcuts as you go.You should be able to wrap smaller presents in the offcuts from the larger presents.m Well, it works for me; I'm a bit anal about wrapping!

Buy from oxfam
Strong, sexy and for a good cause

JollyOldSaintNikkielas · 08/12/2006 19:56

Home Bargains
Also got 12m for £1.50 at'the factory shop'(don't know if its a national chain?)

I buy cheap paper on purpose for children. Not because I'm mean (well, just a bit ), but because there's nothing more frustrating than watching a small child wrestle with some tough shiny stuff swathed in sellotape!

nutcracker · 08/12/2006 20:09

I keep telling my mum that I still haven't brought and and eventualy she gives me a few rolls lol.

itschrismurftime · 08/12/2006 20:09

Asda all the way

Carmenere · 08/12/2006 20:12

The Pier are doing half price wrapping sets and they are gorgeous, three rolls of heavy paper with 2 rolls of ribbon and 6 bows for just £2

foxinsocks · 08/12/2006 20:13

newspaper is good (and the FT is orange so a bit more festive than plain black and white)

singsalot · 08/12/2006 22:04

we're decoratng newspaper, santa is very green and likes to recycle.....

Jbck · 08/12/2006 22:07

Another vote for Ikea & it's usually a little different. Only snag they don't do tags to match all their paper but this year, & last, Tesco did very similar designs & I bought their tags. Ikea paper was nicer, better quality & cheaper.

santasaltire · 08/12/2006 22:11

I got a big , 10 metre roll in one of those discount book places, bookworld or somewhere, only £1.99 and very strong

AllBuggiedOut · 08/12/2006 22:18

Coloured tissue paper and cellophane over the top looks fab. I went on a gift wrapping course once many moons ago...

wrappingpaperBOwZZAndribbons · 08/12/2006 22:20

I agree with pixel - cheap stuff ideal for young children. Otherwise brown paper is a good idea with stamps. But this year I got my adult paper from TKMaxx.
