spub · 14/11/2015 18:10

Plates,
Soak and sleep have towels that can be personalised. Can't say that they'll be too bargainous but they are good quality Wink

Does anyone know much about mobile phones please?

DS1(10) has just announced that he wants a mobile (that he can use instagram on as all his friends have them apparently Hmm). My first reaction was 'no way' and kept this up.

But thinking about it - and seeing that you can get fairly basic smartphones for about £50 I'm beginning to think it would be cheaper than an xbox or playstation why not... he's just beginning to get to the age that he goes off and does things and I let him take a family phone (ie a £5 cheapy, very unsmart, no camera, just texts, makes calls and has a simple caterpillar game on he likes so he can call me if there is a problem or change in plans, or if he gets separated from dh at a rugby match etc).

I have an ancient iphone but he's not starting off on one of those! I'd want one that I could control to some extent - and I'd want it so that I could put some money on it and it would last until it ran out rather than be a 'bargain pay as you go monthly bundle' which basically seems to mean that they don't sign you up for a contract but they get you to sign a monthly direct debit so you might as well be on a contract, you've just paid for the phone up front.

I'm an oldie so of an age that pay as you go used to mean you bought some credit for call minutes or texts (it was pre data days!) and then whether you used it in a week or 6 months, it was there to use at.

it seems really difficult to track this sort of contract down - they want you to buy bundles that last a month Sad. I can't see ds using many minutes in the first year - but he would probably use some data. And switch to wifi if it was around and free hopefully so would need phone to do that.

Anybody got any good pointers? (sorry this has been a bit long!)

Iggi999 · 14/11/2015 18:23

I've just got my ds2 a smartphone, £30 in Asda. Nice clear screen. I am not using it as a phone, it just links to our wifi and he plays games on it (he is a preschooler). If I needed to put money on it it would expire each month.

Badders123 · 14/11/2015 18:28

My ds1 (12) just got given an old iphone4 by my mother.
I got a £5 monthly sim from virgin and he is delighted.
He uses it for texts, listening to music and taking selfies Smile

PinkSquash · 14/11/2015 18:44

GiffGaff does a good PAYG sim card that works out quite cheap. They do bundles or simple PAYG so it should suit. DS1 got the EE Rook with a mumsnet product test and that's quite good for what you want.

Pobspits · 14/11/2015 18:49

I'm wanting almost the exact same thing phone wise for Ds (9)

woodwaj · 14/11/2015 18:50

ecofreckle try survey25 on Anorak

evelynj · 14/11/2015 18:50

Zipzap, you should be able to buy a pay as you go sim & put it in an old phone, (I've got a PAYG iphone-I don't text that much & don't like talking to people but like iPhones!)

I think an old iPhone would do great-been thinking about giving my old one to ds who's just turned 6 for playing games on at home. You can get older models of other phones quite cheap second hand though. It is a fab & not too expensive present!

LastLight · 14/11/2015 19:02

Thanks Restie, worked with the code, £4 - DP should be happy.

Reastie · 14/11/2015 19:03

Zip zap I also product tested the rook and it's a good cheap basic but the battery life is bad and can only be charged via a computer and usb. The camera on it isn't great but does the job. I've just moved to gif gaff and have been very pleased with them so far. They will send you a free sim to get you going.

eastmidswarwicknightnanny Thank you for posting about the Boden £10 gift card that came in the Xmas mailing. I had put my mailing in the recycling without reading it!

Just dug it out and got a lovely thick hooded long sleeved top for just £2 delivered (and free returns if I don't like it!)

Many thanks Star [santa] Flowers

PamelaEwing · 14/11/2015 19:20

Bought myself one of these Glade electric wax melt ceramic warming dishes currently half price at £6 from Wilko.

Not only does it look really nice (on the shelf away from the DC) it really gives out a lovely smell that really fills the room! I got the Christmas apple cinammon wax melts and the bali sandalwood ones and these packs are also half price at £2.50. I think buying it along with some wax melts could make a really nice gift for a hard to buy for person or even just for yourself. Grin

MrsDeathOfRats · 14/11/2015 19:23

Need a present idea for a 7 year old girl that I have never met. (Donating to the Met).

Can't be battery powered or contain food.

The met budget is £20 max. Mine is closer to £10.

Thanks

itsonlysubterfuge · 14/11/2015 19:37

Back from Costco and the Large Lego Storage heads are £9.58 including VAT and the Canterlot Castle was £59.98 including VAT.

So it looks like pretty much the same price as everywhere else.

I remember someone was looking for a code for a Nutella label, I have a spare code, I'll go back and see if I can find who it was.

FabFlo · 14/11/2015 19:40

Do the Nutella labels come off when you wash the jar?

DD1 would love one in her stocking but would want to keep the jar for bits and bobs when its finished.

99problemsbutmykidsaint1 · 14/11/2015 19:49

Love this thread. For those making up homemade hampers, I've found these lovely tea gift sets on ebay for a fiver. Also, they can be split up for individual hampers. Tea sets

kavv0809 · 14/11/2015 19:58

Ooh brilliant thanks Arthur. I will check out Home Bargains and if not then skulk back to Asda.

PoopPoooDeDooo · 14/11/2015 20:00

Zip zap I have just signed Ds1 (10) up for a Samsung phone with Tesco. It's £11 per month for 5000 texts 1mb data & 250mins calls. It's capped at 12.50 per month. I think he's too young but now walks to middle school shock so I think it's sensible

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 14/11/2015 20:01

PoopPoooDeDooo · 14/11/2015 20:01

I meant Shock not shock and meant to say that the handset was free!

Elvish · 14/11/2015 20:10

Platespinner, have a look at spoilt rotten towels(sorry I can't link on my phone) , nice quality and personalised. I bought 2 for birthday gifts earlier this year and was so pleased with them I got my DD one. Just bought 2 more for Christmas presents too. Shame I'm not on commission!

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 14/11/2015 20:13

subterfuge thanks, it was me that was after another Nutella code. I bought another one in the end so if anyone else would like it???
I swapped some of my Tesco club card points for goldsmiths, well that was a mistake. Only spend in store, with print out. And hardly anything cheap in the shop when I did pass one (of course without the print out)

OrangeSquashTallGlass · 14/11/2015 20:16

A while ago there was a link for a £25 new look voucher for £20: www.giftcards.tesco.com/details/New-Look-Gift-Card
But I can't checkout! Has anyone actually succeeded in buying one?
