Jar mixes - would you want to receive or would you think wtf?

I was thinking of doing muffin or brownie jar mixes where you have to add an egg or candy cane hot choc in a jar. Be honest if you would hate something like this!

Well. That's you told OP Grin.

toddlerwrangling · 07/11/2015 21:57

I like the idea! But maybe I'm in the minority as someone who doesn't often bake but also doesn't use packet mixes either. I'd think it was quite a fun thing to do with DD and that it saved me a bit of time. Plus I'd like and reuse the jar.

OP what about a kilner jar with a flavoured sugar? In the past I've made as cheapish presents jars with vanilla sugar (just pop a couple of vanilla pods in a jar of normal sugar for a few weeks); or lavender sugar (ditto with a few dried lavender flowers from one of the edible varieties). With a lovely decoration and hand-made tag.

I hope people didn't hate these gifts too! I love vanilla sugar for making things and normally have a jar in the cupboard to top up myself. Now worried that people have hated or thrown them away :(

ahbollocks · 07/11/2015 21:58

My step SIL did these last year and I really liked it, it was a cookie mix so ideal for me with a 1yo :)

MrsDeathOfRats · 07/11/2015 22:02

Hot chocolate mix with some good marshmallows and a little whisk/nice spoon in a pretty mug wrapped with cellophane, Yes.

Pretty mug with chocolate block on spoon, with mini grater and mini bar of Green&Blacks, Yes.

Also yes to candy cane one as that's Christmassy but I personally would prefer it classic as above.

Jar of ready weighed out flour and sugar is a bit pointless. I still have to add wet ingredients so you haven't actually done much of the work for me. If that makes sense.
I would probably use it as I hate waste, but I wouldn't be bowled over.

BikeRunSki · 07/11/2015 22:06

There was a thread years ago, by a single mum trying to summon up the courage to ask out her DC's swimming teacher. I would set what hapoened?

errorofjudgement · 07/11/2015 22:07

DDs guide group made these a few years ago as Xmas gifts. DD gave it to her brother who took it back to uni, and made up the cookies & shared with his flat mates.

BluePancakes · 07/11/2015 22:10

I've made and given these before. I'd also like being given them (I enjoy "proper" baking too) and I can make use of the jars afterwards.

Clearly in the minority...

MissBattleaxe · 07/11/2015 22:13

I wouldn't really like it much.

BUT
If you gave me home made fudge or home made sweets in a jar however, I would prefer that to any amount of money you could spend. Home made jam, chutney, fruit cake, pickled onions etc etc- all make fantastic presents and I would prefer them to money spent on something I could probably buy myself.

BikeRunSki · 07/11/2015 22:21

My last message was meant for another thread!

needtothinkaboutseniorschools · 07/11/2015 22:32

This is tricky as I think this sort of gift is far nicer than the Christmas tat sold in most shops. And it's all edible or biodegradable or recyclable. So great from that point of view.

But tbh I'd feel a bit uneasy using the premixed ingredients - I bake, so I know that chucking the dry ingredients together at the start isn't necessarily the best approach. Inwardly, I would be a bit "meh, bin the contents, recycle the jar." But on the other hand the thought is what counts and it seems a lovely thought.

LeiaOrgana · 07/11/2015 22:47

Lol Bike I thought you were trying to break the chain of "no I wouldn't want this" with a non sequitur! Wink

I think I'd use it if I were given one, but I don't know how easy it would be to make it look REALLY good. I've seen loads on pinterest etc that look lovely but if I were making them I'd be worried it would just look like a jar of flour...

RitaConnors · 07/11/2015 22:50

Someone gave me one of these last week when we were going on holiday. I felt like it was hanging over me the whole time, like a job I needed to do as I would have to tell the giver how it had worked out.

Polkadot1974 · 07/11/2015 22:51

Always think they look lovely but who for?! Hot chocolate and mug though? Yes please
Or fudge. Much fudge

DownUdderer · 07/11/2015 23:02

Hoc choc or chocolate spoon (for making hot choc) yes - cake mix, no. I'm a grumpy fucker though.

Glassofwineneeded · 07/11/2015 23:03

I received one last year and it was one of my favourite presents! I bake loads but this looked so pretty in the jar that I couldnt wait to add my egg and bake the cookies.
I felt that my friend had taken the time to buy the jar and ingredients, weigh it all out and handwrite the label. And it meant that I got to try out something new instead of using my trusty favourites.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed for another one this year!

Pyjamaface · 07/11/2015 23:11

I got one last year and I liked it! I like baking but it was nice having something ready to go and I got a nice jar out of it as well.

It is a much better gift than smellies, candles or calendars with pictures of other people's kids on imo

CheerfulYank · 07/11/2015 23:15

Lol Bike! I was thinking "so...did she ask him out with a jar mix or..." :o

I'd like this, OP. I am American though and we go for all that Pinteresty whatnot.

ConsciousPilot · 07/11/2015 23:15

I think anything like this is a fucking insult. And infantile.

Bimblywibble · 07/11/2015 23:15

Nope, would never want or use one. i have sugar, flour and cocoa in my cupboards thanks. I agree that fudge or mince pies are much nicer, but even then it's as a little extra, or to someone you'd buy a bottle of wine for. I wouldn't give my mum or dad, for example, just fudge.

Toddlerwrangling what do you do with lavender or vanilla sugar?

SecretWitch · 07/11/2015 23:16

My eight year old received a similar gift from her karate teacher. She loved it! We had a great time making cookies one grey afternoon.

CheerfulYank · 07/11/2015 23:17

Get off the fence and pick a side, Pilot. :o

CheerfulYank · 07/11/2015 23:22

What about soup?

Jar mixes - would you want to receive or would you think wtf?
ShatnersBassoon · 07/11/2015 23:26

Soup?! That's just sustenance, not even a treat. You might as well give your friends a box of fish fingers (deconstructed and stuffed in a jar, of course).

Pyjamaface · 07/11/2015 23:28

Nooo not soup. That's dinner not a Christmas gift
