Do you buy Christmas magazines?

I have quite a stash going back to 1996 - mainly Good Housekeeping, Woman and Home, Prima and Essentials. I do like looking at old ones (with no websites on - you had to phone for details). Some shops from back then have sadly gone now (Woolworths, The Pier etc).
It's nice to look at changing fashions in clothes/decorations (food never changes much).
Anyone else?

Yes! I have already bought 3 this year, I have prima and essentials on subscription too.. And I keep my old ones... Love looking back through them [santa]

Sinkingfeeling · 07/11/2015 20:57

I buy the Ideal Home Christmas magazine every year and like looking through my old copies too.

iwannadancewithsomebody · 07/11/2015 21:00

Good house keeping here! Marks the beginning of my festivities

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 07/11/2015 21:09

I have some cuttings from Living Magazine 1992 in my cooking scrap book.
The decorations are tartan based Grin Today there were loads of tartan duvet covers so it all comes around again Xmas Grin

I bought Good Housekeeping last week, I was going to buy Woman&Home but I thought "No, I'll buy it in Costco, 20% cheaper" . They didn't have it

The Taste Tested features make me laugh, this year they;ve gone for Aldi/Lidl /Morrisons in 95% of them.

TBH, it's the Same Old Same Old. Nothing changes in them except the prices.

Hygge · 07/11/2015 21:52

I also buy the Ideal Home Christmas magazine, mainly because I like the calendar. The sections work well on it and it fits the space on the wall just perfectly.

This year's edition has some red and white bunting in it that apparently costs £75. I'm currently making my own version for less than £20. And I've added green triangle to mine and used buttons to decorate it as well as felt shapes.

millefeuille1 · 08/11/2015 06:47

I do like seeing how trends in decorations change (never got into Scandi). Cakes were all Meg Rivers a few years ago but that seems to have gone. "Party" clothes bonkersly expensive in W&H nowadays - does anyone have a spare £400 for a frock at Christmas?

God Housekeeping, Woman and home, Red and essentials so far, but again this year Woman and Home was disappointing, I won't buy it next year!
(although i think i said that last year too)

millefeuille1 · 08/11/2015 12:46

Agree with this year's W&H - rather dull. I'm hoping Good Housekeeping is better - I do get that there is only so much they can say about Xmas shopping/organising, but W&H do seem to rehash the same content every year lately (although I still buy it!). I like the fact that GH hasn't got the usual Dawn French/Lorraine Kelly/Fern Britton/Nigella Lawson on the cover. I think I already know enough about how they spend Christmas!

I like to get the December Country Living one; i get all excited and have to read it with a sherry or two

lavendersun · 08/11/2015 12:57

I don't buy any magazines, I think they are a waste of cash generally.

No, no bear with me Smile, I am not one of those posters Grin.

If you don't mind an e-mag my library has tons of magazines to read for free. I noticed lots of them when I was downloading something recently.

I have Zinio for libraries on my iPad, linked to my account. You seem to be able to check out as many mags as you want to and can keep them as long as you want to!

lavendersun · 08/11/2015 12:58

Should have said noticed lots of Christmas editions - GH, Red, Good Food, Prima, Woman and Home, etc., etc..

NarcyCow · 08/11/2015 13:00

Just Good Food for me usually.

tilliebob · 08/11/2015 13:11

I usually buy Good Housekeeping, the Sainsburys magazine and whatever else catches my eye. I've a few going back years too. I don't cook at Christmas or indeed ever but I like to tell DH what he's cooking [santa]

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 08/11/2015 14:42

I might give W&H a miss actually (saved myself a few £ there) I'm sure it;s the same as every Christmas issue I've had before .

I'm not their target audience (or GH come to think of it) but I only buy the Dec one.
I got the Sainsburys mag too but haven't read it yet.

millefeuille1 · 08/11/2015 18:26

I'm not a big magazine buyer generally but have always bought the Christmas ones. Maybe one or two in summer to read in the garden. I have picked up the odd gift idea from them (although gifts for men are generally dire if they don't play golf/love novelty jumpers/love tat generally). I do read the food sections.....and then we just cook what we have always cooked. I sometimes fantasise about the elegant Christmas party we will have one day - cocktail dresses, canapes and champagne.....never going to happen!

They are definitely selling a dream millefeuille1 Grin.

A bit like my christmas tree which I bought from Balsalm Hill. It came with white cotton gloves to allow you to fluff out the branches - I always say that I don't think they imagined that someone like me would buy their trees .... my hands are knackered in the winter from looking after my horses, scrubbing water and feed bowls with freezing water, etc., etc..

I have downloaded a couple from the library though which I might flick through.

AimlesslyPurposeful · 09/11/2015 07:00

Another fan of Christmas magazines here.

I have a pile of old ones too which I enjoy a flick through in the run up to Christmas. Love all the visual opulence despite knowing that it's all a load of old cods and most of us are sporting a gravy covered apron and up to our elbows in sprouts on the day rather than sitting at a beautifully laid table in a gold sequinned maxi skirt and a cream cashmere jumper surrounded by smiley angelic looking children.

Always buy Good Housekeeping, Red, Woman and Home and Ideal Home but this year have also bought Country Homes and Interiors and Country Living. Lovely photos of snow and ice covered gardens, animals at a church service, traditional crafts etc.

Made the mistake of buying one of those specific "Christmas Magazines" a couple of years ago and it was so dull. Haven't succumbed since.

PunkrockerGirl · 09/11/2015 07:21

Yes I love them, I buy GH. W&H, and Red. Love the feel and smell of that shiny glossiness Smile
Makes me feel that Christmas has begun.

girlywhirly · 09/11/2015 09:28

I used to enjoy the Christmas magazines, but lately I've got a bit bored with them. I appreciate that if someone hasn't done their own Christmas before they may need the advice, but having cooked roasts for the last 35 years I don't. I wish there were more recipes on using up leftovers.

The decorating and table setting articles are getting a bit same-y. With the tables, I wonder where you are supposed to put the serving dishes and bottles of wine, so loaded are they with table centres and candles. I find it more satisfying to look at the decorations in the shops. No chance of me being dressed to the nines, we like to be relaxed.

merrygoround51 · 09/11/2015 10:02

I buy Red, Woman and Home and Good Housekeeping. Like others it makes me feel very Christmassy but I pretty much never buy anything based on these magazines.

jeanmiguelfangio · 09/11/2015 12:41

I love the crafting christmas ones too, I have mollie makes and the Christmas craft version of Prima although I've misplaced it and it's driving me mad!! I also have some old copies of Marie Claire Idees from France, and I love it. I can read French, but the pictures in them are so detailed its pretty easy to work out. My mum loves all the cooking ones, she has the sainsburys magazine and good food. They make me very christmassy!!

oobedobe · 09/11/2015 19:45

I always get Ideal Home Christmas mag (and usually get the Dec issue as well) - last year I loved Living Etc Christmas issue - they were so creative and funky with their styling.

millefeuille1 · 09/11/2015 20:43

I quite like looking back at my millennium ones (where everything was silver and purple). My children are grown up now but they were 5, 4 and 3 then. Linda Barker was all the rage. Party dresses were OTT sparkly. I probably spent NYE in jeans and a jumper as we couldn't go out and party.
