I've just bought a wii u for my boys for Christmas. Any recommendations for what to get with it? I was thinking of a couple of controllers, are the 10.99 ones on eBay ok or would I need the official ones? It comes with mario kart, any recommendations for another game would be good!

We had a wii u for the whole family last Christmas. There is one main controller that can be used for single use play (while others can watch the television screen) but we also use our old wii controls for more than one player. They can be bought pretty cheaply I think.

Thanks. Will have a look for controllers.

BuildersBum · 10/11/2015 09:27

Old balance board works fine with it.

Some games can be controlled with the game pad, others you need wii motes / wii motes and nun chuks. Depends on the game / activity within the game.

Ideally you need a wii mote with motion control, (built in or the plug in) and a nun chuck per player.

You should be able to check what you need for each game on the case, or a quick look online.

If you afford it, go for built in motion control, wii motes are smaller and lighter & less faffy, especially when you need to attach nunchuk too.

Also, several of the Mario Titles, like Kart and Party are Amiibo compatible, so you might want to look at buying a couple of favourite characters - or asking family too - as stocking fillers etc.

Smyths tend to have the best price £10.99, same as Nintendo.co.uk, whilst Amazon highly inflates prices, especially the harder to find characters.

BuildersBum · 10/11/2015 09:35

More information on Amiibo's

Nintendo Land is lots of fun. 4 year old DS loves the Pikmin and Yoshi levels in that.

Yoshi's Woolly World is lovely too.

We have the main console, plus a couple of Wii remotes for multi player.

lunar1 · 10/11/2015 09:44

Stupid question I know, but how do I know if my old wii motes have the built in motion thing?

Sorry to hijack but I am thinking of getting a Wii U. We have an older Wii - will our controllers work on the Wii U. Also I see the premium pack has a sensor bar but the basic doesn't. Does the bar we have with the Wii work for the U?

OliviaDunham · 10/11/2015 10:12

Controllers and sensor bar will work.

OliviaDunham · 10/11/2015 10:13

Lunar if the have motion plus in them it says on the bottom of the controller, underneath the lights.

OliviaDunham · 10/11/2015 10:15

Amiibos are often 3 for 2 in Smyths etc as are the Skylanders and Disney Infinity figures.

lunar1 · 10/11/2015 10:23

Thank you, looks like I'm buying new ones then! Do I need to replace the nunchuck too?

And while I'm asking questions, what about the classic style controllers, do I need those for anything?

Really glad to read that my balance board will work.

OliviaDunham · 10/11/2015 12:26

Nunchucks will be fine. Have a look at the games your wanting to buy and see if they see they need the motion plus, it will say if they do. Most of the Mario games are ok without it.

OliviaDunham · 10/11/2015 12:26

What do you mean by classic style controllers?

lunar1 · 10/11/2015 13:06

The ones that are shaped like the old n64 or play station controls.

OP posts:
OliviaDunham · 10/11/2015 13:34

No you don't need them. They're only if your playing old game cube games which you can on the original Wii, not sure about the WiiU to be honest as don't own any.

BuildersBum · 10/11/2015 13:43

Some games you can play with various controllers, you could do it with the wii mote, but it may be more ergonomic with a classic controller / Pro controller.

I've just looked at ours and they all say on the back - except Mario Party 10 - what you need to play. Some have several different combinations you can use, others are specific.

OliviaDunham · 10/11/2015 13:58

Sorry Builders is right, you can use them, but we've had a Wii for 8 years and have never needed one.

BuildersBum · 10/11/2015 14:18

It's very confusing and game dependant.

Most just need a Wii mote.

Wii U specific, Toad Tracker is a one player game and you only need the Gamepad, so that's probably the simplest controller wise Grin

Mario Kart you can play with lots of combinations, but wii mote in a steering wheel is hands down the best way Blush

And there is a difference between classic controller and pro controller.

Not confusing at all.

OliviaDunham · 10/11/2015 14:20

Definitely need steering wheel bits for Mario Kart, makes it so much more fun, and easier.

lunar1 · 11/11/2015 03:26

Thank you for all the help on here! It's really appreciated. New controllers and steering wheels ordered. I just need to pick another game, far too many to chose from.

OP posts:
OliviaDunham · 11/11/2015 09:53

Mario Party is a good choice, it has the main game or you can just play the mini games on their own. Can be played 1-5 players.
