Make-up for little girls?

Hi there, has anyone come across any non-tacky make-up sets for little girls aged 5-9 ish? Everything I've come across is very pink and plastic, and there's very little in the way of organic sets on the market.

Has anyone seen anything a bit more natural looking?

You would be better to go for proper makeup sets, teen type stuff from super drug?
"Toy" sets don't come under the same dermatological scrutiny as real makeup.

WiganKebab10 · 04/11/2015 14:12

yes, that might be an idea. It's tricky - I'm trying to avoid them 'growing up too fast', while allowing them to be creative and experiment!

Wigan, I'm glad you started this thread as DD (6.5) has asked for 'play makeup' this year and also a mirror. I rarely wear make up as I work from home so what I have is expensive stuff that lasts me ages.

She just wants some eyeshadows/blusher/lipgloss. I'm thinking I might look in Asda as they do individual items for PS1. Will be lovely to wrap up for her stocking, some little brushes too...

Letustryagain · 04/11/2015 14:14

Still a problem with the 'pound' symbol I see! That should be one pound for the individual make up bits in ASDA.

Claires have some great nail varnish for little girls, its water based and peels off so great for the smaller ones. Not that pink either. I got a little three pack for my dd for 3 pounds I think. Im sure they do makeup for smaller ones too- its definitely online

midgeymum2 · 04/11/2015 20:17

How about a face paint set? Got my dd one last year that has some metallic and glitter pots in as I felt it offered more play value and it sat a bit better with me than a make up set for a then 4 year old. It has been very good value as played with lots and used for school dress up days etc. I take your point about wanting something more natural though - although set does claim to be dermatology tested and its fragrance free and easy to wash off. It's a Snazaroo ultimate party set.

And the body shop do some nice sparkly innocuous fruity flavoured lip balm for a very reasonable price.

Boots light up make upstroke is on offer for £18.99 Fromm£50 this week. Super drug make up is great and also on 3 for 2! Super drug flutter make up advent calendar has been reduced to £8. My dd is a make up fiend!!

cantgonofurther · 05/11/2015 07:34

B&Ms often have nice cheap sets. I get my daughter bits from there.

MrsJayy · 05/11/2015 08:09

Claires do sets for young teens that might suit or boots.I wonder if avon still do tinkerbell make up i loved getting that as a kid

MrsJayy · 05/11/2015 08:10

LUSH do make up too

JimmyGreavesMoustache · 05/11/2015 08:28

boots do some at Xmas - think it's called glimmer babes or something else icky, but nice (relatively) tasteful packaging

they do brightly coloured peel-off nail polish, like the Tinkerbell stuff from the Avon catalogue that I used to covet but my mother said I couldn't have lest I turn into a hoooor.

WiganKebab10 · 05/11/2015 12:20

Lovely. Thankyou all for the suggestions. I'll take a look at all of those. Brilliant!

I bought my nieces the snazaroo iridescent powder set for Christmas (along with some other face paint)...and then promptly opened it and used it myself when going to a glitzy party!

MrsJayy · 05/11/2015 16:07

I am so very sorry but i just lold at hooooor Grin

Bimblywibble · 05/11/2015 19:41

We went the other way and embraced the kids' stuff because I wanted to be clear with DD that it was for playing. So I swallowed my principles and bought stuff in a pink glittery box from Claire's. I have to say it's all suprisingly subtle and washes/wears off easily, so I'm quite pleased with the outcome.

The H&S angle didn't occur to me.

Bimblywibble · 05/11/2015 19:47

Re Jimmy's post, ironically my mum wears loads of makeup and bought me the peel-off tinkerbelle nail polish, but I never got into makeup.

Maybe I should learn from this and give DD something more garish...

PrincessHairyMclary · 05/11/2015 19:49

I brought DD a childrens set last year and wished I'd just brought a normal set, it can't be applied properly, it's hard to get off and it's in horrible garish colours.

Argos have two lovely sets of Snazaroo facepaints I'm tempted by this year instead Princess and a generic

atticusclaw2 · 05/11/2015 20:36

The princess set is the set I bought my nieces (and supplemented with a tube of glitter gels and a tube of the sparkly powder). Be aware that the princess set is a little misleading. The sticks are a good size but the coloured bits are really tiny. They're not much more than the size (and depth) of a penny.

Everydayaschoolday · 05/11/2015 21:56

hoooor Grin Grin

SoupDragon · 06/11/2015 11:14

I have just bought this totally unsubtle eye palette from Primark for DD (nearly 10). She had to wear makeup for a dance show in the summer and loved it. It's strictly inside the house only though!

They did have a smaller more natural box of 6 Browns/greys. IIRS, H&M used to be good for palettes of colour.
