I would say from about 18 months - from when they can hold a crayon!

Ds1 likes them and he's neary 5. I guess older children would like them as well as they get better at colouring?

About 16 - 18 m....... she did start using her older sis's magic stetcher from about 1

Up to about 5 or 6, lmost all children.

DD1 is 7 and now likes those pattern ones that are really intricate.

Be careful not to get pictures with really detailed bits to it if the child is under 5. My 3 - nearly 4 - year old loves them but he can only colour approximately and small pictures just frustrate him as he seems to know he is not colouring them properly. Large, simple pictures are the thing.

okay, so what age do they stop liking ordinary colouring books and only like the real intricate ones?

Depends on how good they are at colouring! My dd is very good at colouring in and art (has won competitions) and she is 6 and would definitely go for the intricate stuff.

Crayola does a really good basic coloring book.

I used to let my daughter color on all the junk mail. It saves paper. Good for yours but not as a gift.

baubleweed · 07/12/2006 19:27

okay thanks guys its just that I have a 5 year old and an 8 year old to buy for, so I guess colouring books are good for both but make sure age appropriate

DS1 (now 6) has never liked colouring books at home though he colours in at school and at the childminders. I have found that girls like it more, or at least younger, because their pencil control is usually better.
