Ok then, so what's all this 'I'll give a Christmas card to everyone' malarky about?

I think Christmas cards should only be given to friends that you don't see regularly and family. Why give a card to people who you see almost every day? Seems silly to me. And you end up spending so much on Christmas cards.

or am I being Bah Humbug?

I didn't do it

I had the craft cards and the potato prints and the glitter already to go but

I COULDN'T BE ARSED

ds1 is 5 and he don't give a hoot about them, he just rips the candy cane from the front (they all come with lollies over here) and hands me the resultant detritus.

Katherine · 05/12/2006 14:15

Well my school age kids write their own now. At least it gets them writing.
DD2 at nursery is trickier - I know she'll be given them but I don't want to write them. I was thinking of doing her some stickers instead. Figured that kids that age love stickers and she'll still have the fun of handing them out!

binkacat · 05/12/2006 14:26

Well I confess I give them to people I see every day. But - I hate getting cards, hate all the clutter and most of them go in the bin without been put up

I think it is a waste of trees, maybe I will stop sending any!

foxtrottothefestivegrotto · 05/12/2006 14:29

katherine, my DCs have rubber stamps with their names on, stickers sound good too.

LittleSarah · 05/12/2006 15:29

Ooh Suzywong, I like that idea, potato prints and glitter, think dd would enjoy it, if I can be arsed...

I have to say I give a few cards to some friends, some family and some people I rarely see... I don't think it really matters.

Although many of my friends don't bothe with cards so don't get many back! Think I had about 4 last year, from grandparents and my mum...

I'd like more, and I like giving them, but don't think I give more than 15!

FrayedKnotRoastingOnAnOpenFire · 05/12/2006 15:34

We have agreed at work this year to have a notice board where you can put one card to all your colleaugues instead of sending individual cards, & then donate the rest of the money you would have spent to charity.

joanna4 · 05/12/2006 16:54

I work in a school this year we are not sending cards to each other but are all donating money to oxfam to buy school dinners in africa.

roisin · 05/12/2006 17:13

I hate getting or giving cards that say

To x
standard greeting
from y

Last year I didn't give any to people at work: we have a scheme whereby you give £5 to charity and put your name on a bauble on a tree.

But this year I want to take the opportunity to say "Thank you" to lots of people who make my life easier; and I will write personal notes and include a little chocolate with them. ... Well that's the plan anyway. I actually need to find some time to sit down and get the things written!

violinplayer · 05/12/2006 17:20

I send cards to the bare minimum number of people and print off labels for the envelopes. Does this make me a bad person?

I always try to buy charity cards but this year I found a website that tells you where to buy cards where at least 81% is donated to the charity instead of the usual 10%.

Here's the link: charity cards

JollyOldSaintNikkielas · 05/12/2006 21:20

I have sent 5!
At work we do a charity thing and put our names on a poster.
DD2 has wrote about 50 cards but it is the first ttime she has been at allinterested in writing and has done them all herself so I'm not objecting too much!

fortyplus · 06/12/2006 09:00

My cousin & his wife live in Berbuda and send out a pre printed photo card every year with a photo of the children and 'Love from the XXXs'.

It's not LOVE when it's pre printed, is it?

If you can't even be bothered to sign your name then why send a card at all?

fortyplus · 06/12/2006 09:00

That's 'Bermuda'

moondog · 06/12/2006 09:05

There is a Barbuda though isn't there?

Another who long ago released herself from tyranny of card sending.

fortyplus · 06/12/2006 09:09

Don't know...

I post about 70 but don't send any to people at work - we all sign a big one or send e-mail greetings.

Tortington · 06/12/2006 09:11

BECAUSE ITS FESTIVEyou load of old knackers.

i dont even like christmas but i like getting cards - cos i dont get any hardly becuase of recycling old knackerfuckers like you lot

fortyplus · 06/12/2006 09:14

custardo - I'll send you one if you like - another one on top of 70 won't make any difference!

snig · 06/12/2006 09:26

last year my ds and i made robin tree decorations (robin shaped card, red felt for breast, stickers for eyes etc) instead of cards. made about 10 and sent them out to relatives and mates with a message written on the back. I nicked the idea from ds toddler group. Anyway one of my friends phoned up to say thank you very much for the festive fish!

fortyplus · 06/12/2006 09:31

I'm laughing now!

poppiesinalinewithtinsel · 06/12/2006 12:36

this is my last year! I have decided to donate to charity as from next year for a no. of reasons.

  1. environmental reasons - i have recycled for years but very few people i send cards to seems to bother and it seems daft to try to be environmentally friendly when others dont bother
  2. the charity is special to me and would benefit from a donation
  3. it always, always, always (Argh) has fallen to me to write the cards, sort postage etc out when i just dont have time anymore. i would rather do something i enjoy!!

DH and i only spoke about this the other day - he did offer to write some, but i had already decided for reasons 1 and 2 above.
we have cards that we get out every year for each other too, so even better!

I got so fed up last year trying to work out how many cards to buy for the family (all of whom we were spending xmas holidays with) i stopped counting at 10! (and there is only my parents and my sisters family but my dd was expected to send one to her cousin etc etc)I told them all i was buying a tree instead and didn't want to receive any cards either. Still felt a bit guilty on christmas eve when they opened the rest of the cards though. Don't think you can ever win on this one.

Stargazer · 06/12/2006 17:50

I made our Christmas cards this year (first time) and it was really fun. However, I've always sent cards to lots of people, those I see regularly and those I don't. I always enclose a letter to my far away friends and a personal greeting to everyone.

For me, Christmas cards are a wonderful way of keeping in touch with friends and family, and they have the added bonus of being the decorations in my house .

NotSoSilentMhamaiNight · 06/12/2006 18:07

What is really starting to grate on my nerves is how expensive hall mark etc cards are v pound shop or charity cards, I'm ashamed to say there is a bit of snobbery in my immediate family re this and so I'm bucking the trend this xmas and only sending charity ones, I spent nearly 70 euro on cards last year and tbh when I saw the MN xmas appeal this year and how some people are struggling it gave me a kick in the ar*e to wake up and realise theres more important things than posh xmas cards.

mummydear · 06/12/2006 18:21

My brother and his wife get them printed, name printed on etc.

Really upset last year when sent a card by them and they didn't bother to sign their own names to member of their family !. Really impersonal.

I might say something this year if it happens again. ( After a glass of sherry or two on Christmas morning I'll say anything !)
