Sensitive subject: Stocking, Sack or pillowcase?

What did you have and what do your kids have?

We always had one leg of a pair of tights which stretched into these 8' long heavy things that we lugged about the landing. Great for us but I'm far too lazy to replicate it for my kids. My mum always said that pillowcases and big sacks were greedy but I swear she get more into each tight leg!
Mine are having these little felt sacks (about 14" x 10") we got from a Santa Steam ride last year. Being a)miserly b)lazy and c)anti waste and excess plastic Far East tat, I'm going to see how long I can fob them off on the kids

We had tights too I have made giant felt stockings for my two.

Spagblog · 04/12/2006 18:32

I had the same! One half of a nude pair of tights. The presents were always wrapped and "Santa" could really cram them in.
DH had a sock (poor bugger)with unwrapped presents
Our kids have a compromise. They have a home made red felt stocking which we will with unwrapped small presents

santacutie · 04/12/2006 18:32

We used to have pillowcases

nogoeswithbellson · 04/12/2006 18:33

When I was a child I had a sack of presents by my bed, main pressies by the tree and we had a snowhouse with little token pressies for after lunch.

Now I give ds a stocking by his bed, a sack of pressies from relatives after breakfast and our main presents are by the tree for after lunch. Next year when he is a bit older I will reintroduce the snowhouse tradition and will have small presents on Boxing day.

hana · 04/12/2006 18:35

always thought sacks were a bit tacky

our dds will have a stocking each and a few presents around that frm Santa, all tohers are under the tree

stockings opened first with everyting wrapped inside, gives up time to wakek up properly!

Stockingsofdinosaurs · 04/12/2006 18:37

My BIL didn't have a stocking at all until he met my sister aged 16 and my mum felt so sorry for him, he then had one every year for a decade! His mum's excuse was that she is French (?!)

As a child, I had a pillow case when I was little and by the time I was a teenager, my mum bought so many little presents, I do believe a binliner was necessary
(My mum is the queen of bargain hunting and so it isn't anywhere near as bad as it sounds)
See how many presents you have (and how big they are) then decide?

PinkTinsel · 04/12/2006 18:40

stockings, bought this year and made by me next year when i have my sewing machine

hate pillowcases and sacks, soooooo greedy! the stockings are only for little presents and the big present is next to the tree so having sacks for stockings implies they're going to get a mountain of little presents too

Snowstorm · 04/12/2006 18:41

In the 80's Santa started producing 'chunky over the knee socks' at our house . My DC get an Ikea felt sock each - it's sort of medium sized.

IdrisTheRedNosedReindeer · 04/12/2006 18:42

We had one of my granny's stockings each .

I have some red stocking a which are (a) smaller and (b) not stetecy for DS and DD. Altjough I'm not sure I will manage to not provide too much .

pandagirl03 · 04/12/2006 18:57

we had a plain white pillowcase and each year on xmas eve we had them before bed and drew a new picture on them they were covered in little pictures, think my mum still has mine somewere, i will do the same with dd when shes old enough.

Snowstorm · 04/12/2006 19:27

That's a really nice thing to do pandagirl03 - something very sweet to have and to look back on - I like that!

JollyOldSaintNikkielas · 04/12/2006 19:53

My 2 have felt stockings and then bigger stuff round the tree. i used to have a pillow case though

fishie · 04/12/2006 20:01

we had grandpa's walking stocking things, they're still going strong and must be about 100 years old by now. amazingly stretchy i might borrow one from mum for ds this year.

we had small pres in stockings in the morning, large pres under tree after lunch. i think nicer than all presents in the morning (dp family did that) children have something to look forward to. and we behaved very nicely in case we were banished....

maryhadaharpsichordyeahlord · 04/12/2006 20:07

pillowcase, but that was for all the presents, there were none under the tree or anything

BaileysMilkshake · 04/12/2006 20:32

Had a pillowcase when I was very small, then when I got to the does he/doesnt he exist stage I got a plastic red stocking size of a sack.

The went to an Aunts one year and forgot it, to be given n old sock on my uncles, which magically became a gorgeous small red stocking with a santa face which I used until DH and I got matching stocking when we moved in together (about 15 years) Still have it now though!

WHEELYbahhumBUG · 04/12/2006 20:35

my mum made our stockings when we were children and has carried it on for her grandchildren so dd has a home made stocking with her name on it.

serenitynightholynight · 04/12/2006 20:37

We never had stockings as children (not sure why tbh)

We only started doing stockings a couple of years ago, and they have really little unwrapped things in them, maybe colouring pencils and a book. Main presents are wrapped and under the tree. At my Mums they just get wrapped pressies and at my MILs they get a big sack with unwrapped presents and a stocking.

crunchie · 04/12/2006 20:40

We use DH old ski socks Really long but still only sock sized IYKWIM

Stuffed full I guess they are about 2' tall, so they usually get a satsuume, a tube of sweets, knickers (disney patterened!) a cd if they are lucky, bubble bath (they want matey mermaid this year) hair bobbles, hats and or gloves and lip gloss.

However they also get Chanukkah pressies, which mean one pressie a day for 8 days (only little ones like a magazine, lip gloss, hair brush/bobbles etc and one big one, this year it is duvet covers and cushions !!

They get one nice toy from each other - the one pink plastic tat they really want!! plus they are getting DVD each, a CD each, a couple of books, a board game, some clothes and a scooter each.

northstar · 04/12/2006 20:48

Pillowcases on the end of the bed in the morning. They are for delaying tactics really, so the size DOES matter. They often contain sticker/colouring books, lots of little but individually wrapped things, exciting but not particularly valuable. These pillowcases can be opened as soon as kids wake up, without mum and dad - then it's half hour extra in bed for us! No-one is allowed downstairs til everyone is ready.

BettySpaghetti · 04/12/2006 20:53

Our two have stockings made by my Mum -they are patchwork, made from lots of Christmassy fabrics. They are really lovely especially as Nanna made them. Smaller than a pillow case but bigger than a large sock.

NorksBride · 04/12/2006 21:37

I didn't have a Christmas stocking (cue violins) so now my DCs, DH, me and even the dog (no apologies) have rather fabulous needlepoint stockings with traditional designs on them and with our names embroidered on. They are big enough for Santa's gifts - sweets, DVD, a few small toys etc. They look great downstairs and only go up to bedrooms on Christmas Eve.

Pandagirl - that's a lovely idea!

UCM · 04/12/2006 21:59

OMG I thought I was the only one who got one half of 'american tan' tights. When I tell people they look at me strangely. I admit I have done this for DS this year

Football, rugby or big wooly kilt socks. Granny got them nice material stockings a few years ago so they go out too. Means santa doesn't have to cram them in quite so much .

Santa brings lots of little goodies and we get the big pressents which go downstairs.

In fact I heard Santa ctually started his shopping today and did quite well in Poundland.
