What can I get for a 4 year old boy that costs about a fiver from Woolies or Argos?

This is my bugbear actually. Santa is visiting toddler group/nursery and we each have to provide a gift for our child to get from Santa. Which would be fine, if I was buying for ds I would just get him something very cheap! But someone had the bright idea of each of us buying for another child. I am stuck with a 4 year old boy who I have never met and who I feel obliged to spend a fiver on (which is an awful lot of money to me!)

I just agreed at the time because I couldn't see any way of backing out of it, but the more I think of it the more narked I am about it really.

Anyway, rant over - what do 4 year old boys like? We only have an Argos and a Woolies - what can I get? Ideas of anything less than a fiver that looks like it could cost a fiver gratefully received too!!

a cheap toy car/train.

colouring pens/pencils and pad.

xmasmummy · 02/12/2006 21:23

books with lots of pics in?

Miaou · 02/12/2006 21:24

Oh yes, toy cars are a good idea. I think they sell them at Woolies.

Of course issue no. 2 is that I wasn't planning on going into town until after the event (it's an 80 mile round trip) - grrrr

I should have said something at the time but I was trying not to vomit all over the organiser

Little torch?

Miaou · 02/12/2006 21:35

oooh torch, good idea - my dds were given torches at that age and loved them.

See, I can't think of things like this myself!!

I only thought of it because i have the Dora one on DD1's list!

xmasmummy · 02/12/2006 21:40

oh right, that fair enough then. would it not be easier to order online? or get someone here to get stuff and post it for you?

80 miles!!

Is there nothing in the houes you could recycle from your own LO's? Stuff they have grown out of but is in excellent condition, (which means they never played with it in the first place in our house).

Spot on.

DS loved those at 4, still does, but really loved them at 4.IYKWIM.

Gillian76 · 02/12/2006 21:47

Miaou, Asda here have torches of various characters. Could I post one to you?

Woolies is a 2 min trip for me so I could get something else if you wanted? Will be in town on Monday

2nervesnapartridgeinapeartree · 02/12/2006 21:48

either or both would be great.

My DD has just turned 5 and is really into story tapes and has watched Babe and loved it. I think you can wing this one as gifts are for the rest of the year imo for this lovely little lad to grow into

Miaou · 02/12/2006 21:51

Aw, you are lovely Gillian . Thank you for your offer!

Just chatting has reminded me about the snail and the whale, and I think that and the babe tape should be sufficient. Phew!

I daresay I will have to provide something for the dds for when santa visits them at school though - will cross that bridge when I come to it I think!

missed the snail and the whale bit!

My 3 love it. Good idea

Gillian76 · 02/12/2006 21:53

It's a bit overkill isn't it - the toddlers present thing. Never heard of buying for each other's kids though

2nervesnapartridgeinapeartree · 02/12/2006 21:56

On the plus side tho you will achieve maximum mummy points for providing educational gift and no plastic or violent connotations.

Well done Mrs Miaou. Go straight to the top of the class.

Miaou · 02/12/2006 21:57

I know. Someone thought it would be a nice change from buying for your own kids. I'm new in the village so can't really object!!! Everyone's lovely but they're all well off so don't have the same "ishoos" as me
