How much do you spend on (young) nieces and nephews?

We have 2 nephews and 4 nieces ranging in age from 2-9. Our own kids are just 5 and 8.

Every year I spend a different amount to my sister in law and brother - one year they spend about £8 and look aghast at us spending more so the next year we spend about that and they buy our kids loads! We've got into a vicious circle I think!

There are 4 sets of parents across the 8 (including ours) kids and tbh we are probably the least 'rich' (ie not rich at all!!) but none of us are really struggling.

I'm thinking of suggesting a budget to everyone??? Would that be a faux pas? How much do you spend on your nieces and nephews?

Try not to spend more than £20 but might go,either side by a bit depending what I see for them.

We only have 3 nieces/nephews. All under 4. Last year we spent £20 on each, this year will be likely closer to £15 as we are just about to have DC2 and I'm going on mat leave in a couple of weeks. Am already trying to keep an eye out for stuff in the sales or on special offer to make the most of the budget. I also buy for my best friends' 2 kids but that's more like £5-10 each.

Babies/toddlers - £8 max, probably less. Token small gift - book or bath toy.

Primary age - £10

Teenagers - only want money or vouchers, £15

I will spend around £20 - £25 I think, but we only have 2 nieces, so we don't have loads of little ones to buy for. My DCs uncles and aunts will spend similar on them I think.

For my older (teen) DNs I spend about £20-£25, and for the little ones it's between £10 and £20

Nephew 1 (3) is having a little remote controlled police car at £7.49, but he'll also benefit from the "family" presents. I've spent £29 on them as a family (sweets, a family organiser, and some naice preserves in a fancy box). His older brothers, my step-nephews (16, 19) haven't got anything in particular, they're just included in the family gift.

Nephew 2 (will be 13 months) is having a Talking Bing toy at £22. But he is my sister's son, lives in the same country as us (BIL and family do not), and we are closer.

About £50 on nieces/nephews/godchildren.
Dp and I have 14 nieces and nephews along with 5 God children!
Tend to buy them something like a Lego set, computer game, pair of boots, something substantial and not tat.

We spend £10-£20. I think that's plenty to get a nice but not too ott present.

wanderingwondering · 06/10/2015 15:48

£20 on each of my sister's children but we only have 2 each. We don't buy for each other any more, just for the children and have tried to lean towards one nice present even if it doesn't cost exactly £20 (less is fine) rather than lots of 'bits'

My siblings and I spend roughly a tenner on each child. It can be a bit more or less depending on what is bought. I try and buy things in the sale all year round organised, moi! so sometimes they get a gift that is worth more but came in under budget. Same for birthdays.

DH's family is a bit more I think but the kids are older so we don't buy the actual presents; we just give money.
