Family Board Games

Am thinking of buying a game for some good friends - partly because easier to buy one thing for whole family than four things but also because it's something we like to receive so hope they will too. Kids will be 10 and nearly 7. I'll obviously have to subtly check what they already have, but let me know your favourites that both kids of that age and parents will enjoy.

Oh yeah my guys play mexican train dominoes all the time with the GPs, I might borrow it for our holidays, I quite like them having different games there but means I never play it!!

think we'll get sleeping queens at christmas

Dancergirl · 02/10/2015 12:08

We bought Mexican Train on the strength of the reviews on Amazon.

What a disappointment, it's as boring as hell. Just glorified dominos. Wasn't cheap either.

Thank you all for these wonderful suggestions :)

I'm buying for a 7 1/2 and 5 year-old.
I've got the scavenger hunt in my basket, that looks fantastic, just their thing.
I like the look of Dobble too, but I'm not sure whether to go for the kids version or the normal one. Those of you who have it, and recommend it, which would you choose? On one hand I don't want something that is too complicated and frustrates them; on the other hand, I don't want it to be too simple and they get bored quickly Confused

And thanks for introducing me to SET!!
I've been online to play and am already addicted, can't wait til another one comes up tomorrow! Not sure whether to buy the game or just do the online ones...

If your kids are a very neurotypical 5 and 7 I wouldn't bother with the kids version. DS could benefit from it but we often just give him a headstart by letting him look at the cards before anyone else .

My games wishlist has well over 100 items on it Blush

fuzzpig · 02/10/2015 16:10

Huevos just get the game Wink I have on occasion played through the entire box by myself [saddo emoticon]

fuzzpig · 02/10/2015 16:11

but if you have an iOS device there's an app called trioss I think, which is based on the same idea as Set. May be on android too

HuevosRancheros · 03/10/2015 07:11

Toffee thank you, I'll go for the regular version :)

fuzzpig SET seems to have ended up in my basket too Grin

Qwirkle is popular in this house and is played by DD aged 9 and DS aged 4, who needs a bit of help but has an uncanny (and irritating) skill at finding qwirkles.

MrsCornish · 03/10/2015 08:22

Telestrations. Any age, great with kids, great with adults, best game out family has ever played.

fuzzpig · 03/10/2015 08:28

Hurrah Huevos! Enjoy :o

If you like Qwirkle, I think Qwirkle cubes even more. It's the same idea but you have to roll dice to get the shapes you need so it adds the element of probability and risk :)

HuevosRancheros · 03/10/2015 09:28

Thank you all :)
Telestrations looks great MrsCornish, but DS is too young right now - he has only just turned 5 and his drawings, um, leave something to be desired Grin. But I'll definitely bear it in mind for the future :)

I had initially dismissed Qwirkle as too tricky for DS, but actually I think it might be ok. So that's in the basket!

Sadly, if I'm honest, I think SET will be either too tricky or too dull for DS, so I'm not getting that :(
I'll keep doing the online games though, and if I'm still addicted in a few months, I'll ask for it for my birthday :)

Thanks again for all your ideas :)

Dancergirl · 04/10/2015 00:10

I've never heard of telestrations, how do you play it?
