Ds has just turned 7 and want to encourage him to read more. He's mainly into comics, but will occasionally pick up a book and read a bit. He has all the Roald Dahl ones (which would be my first choice) but wondered if there were any books you would totally recommend.

My 7yo DS loves the Mr Gum books (and so do I).

Anything by David Walliams, similar style to Roald Dahl.
Tom Gates
Diary of Wimpy Kid

Mine loves Mr Gum, Switch series, London Zoo series (family who live on a canal boat and mum a vet at London Zoo), Stink - about Judy Moody's little brother, just started Harry Potter, Spy Cat/Dog, Beast Quest/Sea Quest (Very formulaic but all boys seem to go through a phase of reading them ). Most of the above series can be picked up very cheaply at Book People

DS (nearly 8) really likes the Dragon Sitter books. I've not read them with him though, so I've no idea what they're like! We read Roald Dahl or Harry Potter together, mostly.

He went through a BeastQuest phase earlier in the year, and also really like the Dinosaur Cove books.

1122christy · 24/09/2015 13:49

Oh also the how to train your dragon books

PesoPenguin · 24/09/2015 15:34

DS is 6 but in year 2 and likes, Horrid Henry, Beast Quest, Dirty Bertie, Secret Seven etc, The Magic Tree House, How to Train Your Dragon, Horrible Histories, Oliver Moon... I'm sure more will come to me...

Autumn DS is not a massively advanced reader (I think around stage 10 of ORT). Although these are more advanced than his school books. He and his older brother (nearly 9) both enjoy them as they are very factual, so they learn lots of facts about the animals.
