Is there a poncetastic thread this year? I am itching to ponce!

I have made Winter chutney, chill jelly and mint jelly already, but only because my tree dumped 15kgs of apples simultaneously and they don't keep!
I have also pickled the mustard pears and made the sloe gin. Apple and blackberry vodka and rosemary jelly to follow, along with apple membrillo and various other apple related things!
We have found ourselves with a small christmas for four so I'm giving some thought to a different CHristmas meal. Oysters? Game terrine? Beef?
Decisions decisions…...

holmessweetholmes · 14/10/2015 13:54

Argh! Have been failing to keep up with all your Poncery and the thread fell off my Threads I'm On.

I'm hankering after a vaguely Scandi-looking Christmas. My house is almost entirely painted white or cream with lots of wood, so I think it would look good. I've been looking on Pinterest for ideas.

Does anyone have any inexpensive or honemade festive Scandi-style decorations ideas? Also, do any of you have poncetastic Christmas table runners, or are table-runners un-poncetastic?!

TheOnlyPink · 14/10/2015 14:07

holmes I'm looking for table runners too. Want to start thinking about table decorations. No help for you, but am keeping an eye out!

I'm currently crocheting this Christmas present pillow. It's pretty easy, I'm a beginner, and its the same stitch over and over so perfect for watching those Christmas 24 movies with! Xmas Smile

Not sure what other jobs I could be getting on with though.

WaitingForEgg · 14/10/2015 14:20

I'm also on the hunt for a table runner. I seriously need to get back to poncing, pregnancy related commitments have taken over and i'm seriously starting to slack Sad i am fearful I have left the making of my cake too late. Will it be ok if I bake this weekend?

OP posts:
Snausage · 14/10/2015 14:32

WaitingForEgg it will be FINE! Recommend soaking your fruit asap before you bake on the weekend.

TheWoollybacksWife · 14/10/2015 15:37

WaitingForEgg I only made my cakes on Monday. As Snausage said get your fruit into soak now - I soak mine for at least a week and the cakes come out lovely and moist.

Holmes I was in Asda this morning and they had Scandi duvet covers for about £15. I don't think the shops have their full range of decorations in yet. Places like Asda, Matalan and Wilko have some Scandi style on their websites (I think) but will probably display more in store when Halloween is over.

I have a lovely purple table runner. I bought it last year and I'm sure places like Dunelm will sell them this year. A committed poncer will make theirs, though... Xmas Grin Xmas Wink

I'm preparing slowly but surely. My cakes are made and stored. I'm going to use the rest of the fruit to make a couple of individual puddings at the weekend and I'm testing out a recipe for mulled cider this evening

My big thing at the moment is deep cleaning and de cluttering - DD1 is working away currently so my plan for the rest of this week is to gut her room (I have her permission).

Pixa · 14/10/2015 17:43

Am I too late to ponce?

holmessweetholmes · 14/10/2015 18:19

Thanks TheWoollyBacksWife!

SwedeDreams · 14/10/2015 18:26

I am making a table runner out of Xmas fabric I found on Amazon. I shall post pictures of it once it's done, unless it looks really awful. It's holly patterned. This is my first time using my sewing machine so I'm a bit sceptical about whether the results will be any good!

Thanks for ideas for the pine cones TeaPleaseLouise, I'm going to look on pinterest for those ideas! I think DP would DIE if I made an entire tree out of pinecones though... Grin

trufflehunterthebadger · 14/10/2015 19:38

well i was planning an ultra low-maintenance crimbo this year due to being on a residential course until xmas eve. now they have given us annual leave for the whole week so will be PONCING MASSIVELY ! last year was overshadowed by DH being investigated by the IPCC and potentially losing job; that finished in may (happily) and i just got a £13k payrise due to new role so this year will be mega-ponce-arama.

i do a swedish meal on christmas eve, visit local famous lit-up village with dd and do xmas eve box.

crimbo day consists of DH bringing his section home for a fry up so will have house full of 16 police officers (they are early turn and will be dead until midday). then family arriving at midday, doing canapes and bits for lunch, a mimosa bar. i ahve done a "candy buffet" for the last couple of years aa we always have a houseful so this runs till new year. lunch at about 4pm, if i hold my nerve i'm going to do a 4pm tesco run and see what i cam pick up cheap :0 we will be 14 including children

boxing day at my parents

never do anything on NYE as DH always works so i have a quiet night in with the telly. i am working 8-4 in the daytime then will go to my mum's as it is her 70th birthday

NYD we have a houseful for afternoon tea, will be about 20

TheWoollybacksWife · 14/10/2015 20:23

Wow Truffle that sounds like last year was incredibly stressful - glad you have seen the back of it all. Your local lit-up village sounds lovely.

Welcome Pixa - it's never too late to ponce. Do you have a speciality ponce or are you an all rounder? I'm a craft dabbler - I've made a tree skirt and an advent calendar that come out every year. I love cooking too - mainly baking but I have ponced up the Christmas dinner. I ponce by stealth - DH just lets me get on with it now. He gave up "his" tinsel very reluctantly Xmas Grin

The mulled cider was very good if I say so myself. hic

LBOCS2 · 14/10/2015 20:36

Well, I now have my dried hydrangea heads for my homemade wreath all ready to go, just waiting for an appropriate time to start making it.

I'm sending DH to the market to buy my chillis for the chilli jam this week, so I'll hopefully get that going this weekend. I'm also intending to get on with the Christmas pudding rum and some mulled wine syrup, which I thought looked interesting and worth a go.

Binglet · 14/10/2015 20:55

Again I have ridiculous questions. But jars for chutneys?! I've seen some 100g ones on eBay?! Too small!?! I'm doing 7 hampers each with two chutney/jams so 14 jars in total. Don't want to spend a fortune on glassware. Same with bottles for flavoured vodka.

Olivepip59 · 14/10/2015 21:47

Really hope I'm not too late to ask, "Christmas pudding vodka???"

Can anyone find the Christmas spirit to post the review it link me to it?

Thank you, it sounds amazing!

PjDay · 14/10/2015 21:49

I am off work this week so full on planning has begun. I have made my mincemeat and began planning my festive menus.

I can't remember who was looking for tartan gift wrap but M&S have a lovely range this year.

BayeauxT · 14/10/2015 21:57

Holmes if you google "swedish christmas hearts" there are loads of tutorials on how to make these very Swedish paper decs. I like to string them up like bunting.

holmessweetholmes · 14/10/2015 22:43

Thanks BayeauxT - will check them out!

expectingnumber3 · 15/10/2015 12:45

I have found my home! I have long been mocked for my poncing ways but am finally among friends!

I did no poncing last year as I was beached on the sofa expecting dc4 who put in an appearance on Jan 12th. I was very grumpy over Christmas. Getting my ponce on again this year though.

In the past I have made a tree skirt that comes out every year, and all my tree decs too, so this year I'm planning on some type of garland for the mantelpiece to go with my scandi theme. Think I might do crocheted hearts. Or maybe snowflakes. Am working on scandi themed applique cushions too - white snowflakes on a red background. V pleased with them so far. We also have stockings that I made with our names embroidered on so I have to do a new one for DC4. Will also be making a wreath for the door. Its the first time I've done it so a bit nervous but there is a workshop at the DC's school in early December so am going to have a go.

My cake and pudding are made as is a ton of Christmas chutney as my DF gave us a huge bag of apples from my parents orchard. The house still smells of vinegar but the chutney is yummy. I will be making jam, marmalade and chili jam too. And cranberry gin, yum. DH is the baker here and is planning on biscotti for us and for the hampers we do for PIL's and my parents. I'll be making chocolate truffles, chocolate bark (crystallized ginger on dark chocolate this year) and fudge for those as well, and I've had a crack at candles too inspired by the thread in arts and crafts. I've done Lavender and Amber ones and Nutmeg and Ginger, my favourites from Jo Malone that I can no longer afford since having DC's. The DC's are planting hyacinths for GP's this week as well and I am planning on taking pics of them doing it to turn into tags to prove they did it themselves!

Need to crack on with my homemade presents too. I made an apron for my DM for her birthday as she is tiny so bought ones never for. DF has requested one as he has the opposite problem and is very tall so again bought ones never fit! They have just had a new kitchen so DM has requested homemade table mats. No surprises but as least they get what they want. Dsis wants me to make her a tunic from a blouse pattern I have used before and I'm knitting her cashmere bed socks too. DH is v arty and is designing bespoke wine bottle labels for DBIL who makes amazing homemade wine. More cashmere socks for my best friend too. We don't buy for DH's brothers and sisters which makes life easier.

I also make a special present for each of the children that is just from me. I am making a doll for DC4 with a little bed and lots of play food for DC3 who is obsessed with cooking. Still not sure about DC1 and 2 but hoping inspiration will strike. And every year I make them Christmas PJ's and new dressing gowns with fab fabrics a friend sends me over from America. I'm expecting the parcel any day, v exciting.

Sorry for the epic post, very excited by the thought of all the lovely poncing! And have frightened myself with the amount of stuff I have still got to do. Wonder if my clients would be ok with me stopping work for Christmas now??!!

TheOnlyPink · 15/10/2015 13:11

binglet I know lots of people by 20p jars of jam or whatever from tesco just dump what's in the jars. It works out cheaper than buying from eBay etc, but loads of food wasted and a faff.

Whatabout · 15/10/2015 15:37

Number3 I love your post your enthusiasm is infectious!

I'm going to make a quilted table runner. Never quilted before but found a simple pattern.

BiddyPop · 15/10/2015 15:47

Why not buy lots of raspberry jam, and make a load of Victoria sponges and those biscuits with a jammy centre (just a thumbprint in dough type, although if you WANT to make HM Jammie Dodgers I won't stop you!!)?? And a jam roly-poly or jam steamed pudding for tea. Then it's not so much of a waste.

Are there any coffee mornings for school or Macmillan or similar coming up that you could offload the goodies on?

BiddyPop · 15/10/2015 15:50

Sorry, that was for TheOnlyPink about the jam jars.

I have to reduce the poncery this year, but am still lurking to cheer myself up. And had already bought 2 Christmas mags so am reading those on my morning commutes on the busXmas Grin

I'm not sure what our Christmas will look like exactly, except that it will be a travelling year so will have to hang my poncing head in shame - (whispers) it will be the fake tree this year

expectingnumber3 · 15/10/2015 16:22

Ah, thanks Whatabout! Quilting is addictive once you get going. May well add a runner to my list as well!
Is it machine or pieced paper that you are doing?

expectingnumber3 · 15/10/2015 20:42

Love that runner! I NEED it in my life!

Adds charm pack to ever growing fabric list.....
