OK this year I am fobbing relatives off with a box of six hand-made salt dough decorations made by the 4 year old (metallic paint and coordinating holographic glitter (persuading her that coordinating glitter was The Way Forward was tricky but, I feel, necessary) - they are quite tasteful.

Homemade presents though - are they naff or are they nice? And what are you presenting the relatives with this year?

they're the best kind imho.

relatives are getting nowt, we've all agreed, children only, although they'll all be at our house for dinner so there'll be a table gift for everyone.

Nice, if from children or absurdly talented adult.

I have bought some tasteful gift boxes off Ebay to put the decorations in, and taken some pics of DD making them to stick inside with them (so the rellies don't think I just got excited myself with the glitter)

I think they're great as they show a lot of care and consideration. Plus you save a fortune!! All ds's grandparents/great grandparents are receiving a bundle with a flowerpot with ds handprints on, compost and seeds (idea stolen from a mumsnetter (can't remember who which is very rude of me). Then a calendar with footprints and photos laminated. We got one from his nursery and loved it. They will also be getting a box with either handmade chocs/cakes in. I started doing homemade gifts from year 1 and they all loved it. I defo think its worth doing as it means so much more.

Ooh I hope it isnt too naff.
I have made everyone a jar of homemade plum chutney and a bottle of Damson Gin!!
Does that sound a bit peasanty?

morningpaper · 29/11/2006 21:00

No that sounds good MrsNoah

I am always worried about home-made sweets from children because I assume they are basically coated in snot

But from adults - YUM!

Chutney is good and damson gin is fab and with a slightly dangerous edge...

I may allow ds to be involved in a fairy cake but nothing as sacred as sweets!!!

Glad you like the idea morning paper.

C210lords I made buns once with dd2 and when we sat down to eat them afterwards found bizarre objects in a few of them. Turns out she was so impressed with idea of finding foil wrapped coins in xmas pudding she had added a few surprises of her own to the buns while I had answered the phone!

We're a bit less-than-rich this year, so I've bought some really nice cake tins from this site and am making gooey cookies for everyone.

Is that really tight?

I'd love to get something my niece made for Christmas. (She's 3).

I am an art teacher for Primary school age and I always like to get the kids to make Bracelets for their Mums etc. You can buy a pack of Fimo (oven dries in 30mins) and make the most beautiful beads with it.
Or buy a pack of air dry clay for a couple of quid and get the kids to make an animal for someone then paint it. (this never fails to raise stifled giggling as the designated recipient attempts to work out what it is!!!
